Yes, it's true. I may have quit social media forever. To be clear, the one I was REALLY addicted to was Twitter. But I'm not anymore! I kinda tricked myself into quitting. I'll show you how. (Also to be clear, I'm not quitting entirely. Just no longer addicted. I go DAYS without logging on. It's wonderful.)

Something i heard about any addiction is that the more times you quit the more likely you are to quit for good. This might have just been your time. I've quit most social medias that way, by quitting multiple times over about 5 years. If you're trying to quit something, don't give up just because you gave up!! try again! it's gets easier and easier each time :]

getting rid of instagram was similar for me- i genuinely thought i was going to lose friendships and that my life would collapse, socially, without it. but no. i feel a lot better without social media, especially knowing that it is designed & developed to keep you on it. i feel healthier when i can’t see what everyone else i know is up to, all of the time.

The best part about quitting Twitter is how quickly you realize it stinks when you go back and check it again. Like "wow, this is how I was spending my time..."

I quit everything but YouTube like ten years ago, still going strong. All my real friends know I don’t have it at this point and they all think to call/text for events. It’s actually really nice. Couldn’t imagine going back.

OK fine, I'll comment on your videos from now on. Though that seems like a big commitment, how about I'll comment on this one, and we'll see how it goes.

I quit TV after many many years glued to it. Few years later got addicted to twitch. I quit twitch after many many years glued to it. I now experience boredom again and I think it's great. I do miss the awesome people over there, but it's just too addictive.

I don't use Twitter, but I need a way to not accidentally fall into a doomscroll of short form videos on Facebook, Youtube and Instagram. I thought I'd solved it when I deleted TikTok, but then TikTok spread everywhere else.

My best tips to make apps less addictive on iPhone: Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters > Enable Color Filters > Grayscale

Usual lurker here being brave and commenting. I wanted to get rid of socials for awhile but having a baby finally motivated me to get rid of it all. After reading about the effect of social media on children and young teens, that was the final motivation. I’m happier and doing more things I actually enjoy with my free time. I obviously still have YouTube, but I don’t think “the algorithm” has ruined YouTube in the same way it as all other social media platforms. My feed is still lots of educational, creative, and inspiring and usually fun content!

I signed up to twitter then forgot the password and that was that. So grateful!

YouTube has been my only digital media outlet for almost a year now & it's been so damn beneficial to my mental health. Some folks can maintain a healthy self esteem and also not spend hours scrolling scrolling, but not this gal.

Reddit and Twitter seemed so hard to quit and then I missed em. It’s better on the other side.

Good timing. I’ve deleted all social media apps on my phone (other than YouTube) 3 days ago! It’s really hard but will be worth it in the long term

I'm definitely a lurker. I just wanted to let you know that I like your videos, and I think you do a good job on them.

I have a problem with youtube, but I will make sure to not think about it and keep watching, thanks Mr. Water

I think this hits on the main issues with social media. Thinking for myself - I have constant input from others and I don’t sit with my own thoughts anymore. And the faux-social aspect of interacting by comments is addictive and a low quality type of relating to other people.

For the strong opinions, I completely agree with you. I've always said that people tend to leave reviews most when they want to express anger or something, and it's the same for online in general comments. The people that express anger/negativity will be the loudest, second you got the people with super high excitement, and those with minor thoughts will just say quiet. I noticed that whenever I would go into the comment section on instagram, I just end up feeling like shit after. I still use instagram, but I've had a higher sense of general happiness from just not looking at comments anymore.

Using apps for a "purpose" is important, I agree. We all know that all the apps are designed to keep us on them for the maximum amount of time and to be addictive so then more ads can be shown to us. My apps previously were subscribed to such a giant mix, and it makes it so easy to just keep scrolling. I recently cleaned up all my follows/subscriptions to focus mainly on just artists (because I do art and want to insert myself into the community) with only a few exceptions, purposely scroll past anything that's "suggested", and stick to just checking on what's new with those specific people before being done. It leaves me feeling like I've used my time well and I feel less like a blob.
