Movie I was supposed to see was sold out and begrudgingly decided to buy a ticket to this one. Best thing that ever happened to me. This in theaters was absolutely enthralling and one of my all times favorites

From a classically-trained musician's point of view, some ornamentations in the violin line were improvised, which was common for the era (and in modern authentic performance). The level of historical detail in this movie is incredible.

Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major, K. 216: III. Rondeau. Allegro.

About halfway through the movement.

This movie was criminally under-rated. Would have loved to have seen more of O'Brien's series adapted.

Interesting historical note for anyone that might care. The French ship Acheron was based on the US Frigate Essex and her actions during the War of 1812. She took some two dozen British prizes before being blockaded and bombarded by the Royal Navy at Valparaiso AFTER she had struck her colors, for which the British captain of HMS Phoebe was severely reprimanded. Why do I know any of this? My many times great grandfather, Elijah Chapin, was a US Marine sergeant aboard Essex. 😉

my favorite movie about nothing, as I once told my friend. almost by design, Master and Commander has a weak plot. this makes room for us to really spend time with and get to know the characters, their complexities, relationships, motivations, themes of morality, life, loss, joy and sorrow - as if we too are aboard the HMS Surprise. it really is one of the most utterly immersive and detailed portrayals of the early 1800s I’ve ever seen, in part due to the the captivating musical score. sure, maybe the plot could be more complex or have some sort of greater meaning, but why bother? life often lacks a grand plot, and what matters is the moment and those we share it with.

absolute banger of a movie.

The violin bow he uses is a transitional bow bridging the baroque era bows with modern, what a crazy detail that they got right!

Love how the performers who recorded the music (members of the Australian Chamber Orchestra) made this section of the concerto into a duet and took some very tasteful liberties

I’ve always thought this films score melded perfectly with the setting and is probably why the film is as adored as it is.

it's a shame they never made sequels like Rusty wanted :(
Not too late, though

Such a solid and entertaining movie. I love the opening battle between the two frigates Surprise and the Acheron. Very realistic and the soundtrack is superb. One of my favorite movies of all time
