Some interesting facts about the movie:

1. Russell Crowe learned to play violin for the film and referred to it as the hardest thing he'd ever done for a film.

2. This film was intended to be the first entry in a franchise. However, due to low box-office numbers, no sequels were ever made, despite critical acclaim and multiple Oscar nominations.

3. The movie combines two novels - "Master and Commander" and "The Far Side of the World". Both deal with chasing down a privateer and the movie combines the long chase of the latter with the furious climactic battle of the former

4. Paul Bettany was one of the few actors who did not get seasick during filming. He was a member of Sea Cadets as a kid.

I believe it's the closest you can get to being in the 19th century navy without actually being there, a Master piece of a film and acting

This movie was acclaimed by the critics (rightfully so) but did not make a lot of money, whereas Scott's Napoleon is universally detested but is a box office success... sigh

My absolute favorite movie in the last 25y

I've been on that ship too. It used to be called the HMS Rose, and was docked in Bridgeport, CT. They even used to have haunted houses on the lower deck back in the 80's. Very cool to see her preserved

Greatest movie I’ve ever seen about that time period in the Royal Navy. Very brutal very little in medical care. “is them his brains?” “ No that’s dried blood, those are his brains “ …Back to work !!!!

I can't think of many bigger cinematic crimes, than this movie not getting a sequel. My god what a master class. It left the door wide open as well. I suppose we shall never know if they caught her back up!?

Unsurpassed: the movie and the soundtrack. Having watched it literally dozens of times and each time it provides me with the reward of a deeper appreciation for work. Ah yes, the Devil is at the wheel of this phantom ship. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in 2024, during which time I will undoubtedly be watching M&C again. Cheers.
