I've just got my Forester. My first Subaru and my first ever new vehicle. Very impressed all around and can't wait for global warming to deliver consistent sub-zero winters in UK so I can put it to the test!!

Perhaps I'll fork out on a Barbour jacket too!

SUBARU made the Zero fighter. After the war, they used that engine technology to develop boxer engines for cars. They are a great Japanese manufacturer with many technologies that TOYOTA cannot offer, such as 4WD, EyeSight, and cost.
Once you actually get behind the wheel, you'll understand the excellent visibility, acceleration, handling, stopping, sense of security, and the joy of driving that is not found in other manufacturers.

Finally a review by someone that understands why people buy Subarus (or crossovers in general). So many out there are people who just don't get it. Yes, we have to have practicality, you really can't fit your 2 dogs in the trunk of an Aston, but that doesn't mean that we don't like to drive or like our cars to have a personality and fit into our lifestyle. Too many out there make SUV\Xover owners sound like we buy cars like we would a dishwasher. Mazda and Subaru sell (and seriously, most of Subie's lineup ARE Xovers) a ton of cars because they understand there's a significant number of shoppers who aren't looking for a wheeled Maytag. Mazda for the sporty folks who are willing to sacrifice some space and tech for the sporty ride, Subie for those who want to go off the beaten path. Saying everyone who buys a Xover is just looking for transportation is like saying everyone who buys a Mustang really wants to stuff it into the ditch leaving Cars and Coffee. It is insulting.
Nice job, HoC. Well done.

I’ve got a 3 yr old Forester - love it. I had a test drive in the new one today (Touring model). It is a lot different in many ways and a big upgrade. I will get one - it’s superb. Great in depth review here.

I live in Canada and have 2025 Forester sport with 2.5 l engine 180 hp and very happy with a car.Acceleration from 0 to 100 kph is 8.2 seconds and that is a big difference from UK version.I hope you get 2.5 in UK.Car cost me 49000 Canadian dollars with all the taxes and fees.I love your work.

I love the Forester but passed on the Hybrid model because I keep my cars until the parts fall off and when hybrids get old you’re essentially maintaining two separate power trains in one vehicle and so at some point you’re face with replacing your car a few years before you would have if you had bought the gasoline only engine or one day the straight electric motor version when that technology gets straightened out but not yet for me or anyone if you study the current repair records.

I can't see any owners being fussed about the power.
They'll arrive at their destination relaxed having enjoyed the scenery more from the comfortable seats.
My Dad had 1.8 and 2.2 Legacy, a diesel Outback and a diesel SV. None of them were unreliable at all.

That was a very detailed candid review, thank you. The permeant 4x4 performance compared to rivals is apples and oranges. I agree about the option of having the higher output engines, but in truth this can be said for the entire Subaru range on offer in the UK, bar the Solterra. As an happy owner of the Outback the only real reason to change this would be if the Turbo version was on offer.

I've had my Forester hybrid for 4 years, I love it.
Its Safe Comfortable easy to drive, great for long journeys.
In recent tests it was the only car to recognise pedestrians wearing high visibility clothing at night. Beating its rivals.
It has its faults, but I wouldn't have anything else.
35mpg average 42mpg motorway, for the previous 148bhp model. Not impressed they've down graded the engine, I totally agree we should have the 2.5 litre, the US has.

Simply brilliant! I'm a big fan of barbour jackets and the forester, own a few of their wax jackets and drive a forester on a daily basis. They are just simply the most practical things. I've been telling people that subaru to cars is like barbour to jackets, they only carry a few products but do them really well. (Bedale, Beaufort, Border vs Crosstrek, Forester, Outback) You're the first person I've heard making similar comparison, I think we'd have a good conversation should we ever bump into each other in a bar.

Great review. I just bought a new Subaru Forester Touring in the Autumn Green. I purchased all the safety bells & whistles. I traded off a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Husband loved it, but the Jeep was a bad fit for me. I love my Subie. It is easy to get in and out of and is comfortable. I checked it out with my daughter and friends. It is no fun going places alone. All were comfie. The engine is perfect, just fast enough but will never get me in trouble. I love the way it looks. I can’t haul as much, but I can haul enough. This has been on my mind for several years. Happy with decision. The adaptive cruise control is irritating, but luckily can be turned off.

Great review, lots covered and very honest. Shame about the lack of power. I've been waiting on this new Forester for quite a while and watching lots of reviews on the new model since it came out. Still waiting for it to arrive in Ireland and I'll be checking it out as soon as it arrives.
I still miss my old 2009 2L diesel Legacy. It was quick, sat low, handled really well on all roads, loads of grip, great visibility... I better stop 😢😂

This is a very good review! The first I've come across that goes over this screen functionality. I do however think that the car is quite stylish. Possibly in a bit of a subtle way, but I find that very appealing.

A helpful and balanced review - thank you. Two minor comments:
(1) The (mild) criticism of power/acceleration: exactly the same comments were made about my own 2019 mild hybrid model. And, when I first had it, I would have concurred with the criticism - but five years and 40k miles later, I think things have improved as the engine has loosened up. Accelerating from a junction in S mode is remarkably rapid. I have shocked passengers by the rapid take-off from stationary.
(2) The limited warranty (3 years, 100k miles) - but please note that it includes a 5 year warranty for the drivetrain component.

Just handed over my Q3 and looking to get this... Basic trim of Q3 is just that - basic. Truth being told, I'm moving from city driving to rual driving and car camping, so not like for like swap of course. But I'm "safe" driver so the sluggish engine probably won't bother me at all. Great review, thank you 😊
