Do women really make only 77 cents for every dollar a man makes? In "Women's Figures," Diana Furchtgott-Roth takes on that and other myths regarding the economic progress of women in America.

It is very true that the FIRST thing one must control for is hours worked per year. Any wage gap exercise that does not do this is not worth the paper it is written on.

This has always been my question; if women are being paid less for no reason, why don't they do anything about it? Sue the employer, pay discrimination is against the law. I never understood why women just seem to take it in this scenario (outside complaining).

Shooting qualification standards are the same across the board. Physical fitness standards are lowered for women so they can get higher scores than males for doing less. All branches of the military and many law enforcement agencies lower physical fitness standards for women. Many of them use that misrepresented score in the promotion process, which means men have to work harder to get promoted and get paid more. Standards should never be lowered to met a quota for gender or race.

According to the Equal Pay Act (EPA) and the Civil Right At, wage discrimination is illegal and the employer can be heavily penalized for such violations.

A female soldier completing 34 push ups on her PT test will earn a score of 86 (out of a possible 100); a male soldier completing this same number will FAIL THE TEST.

Ya, It's not fair that women live longer than men. Something needs to be done about that !!!

The Paycheck Fairness Act doesn't try to give nurses the same salaries as doctors. It says that employers must justify why they are paying male/female *doctors* different amounts. So if a company pays a male doctor 10% more than a female doctor, they have to explain that. If they cannot then it may be gender discrimination and reason for a lawsuit. But employees have to *know* what salaries are to have an investigation like this, which is one of the elements of the PFA.

"They make exactly the same otherwise they could sue that lawfirm..."

How can they sue the lawfirm if they do not *know* that they are paid unfairly? Many companies make it a violation to share salary information so most female employees do not know that they are paid unfairly. The Paycheck Fairness Act would fix this, making it illegal to fire an employee for sharing salary info. If women and men are paid fairly for the same positions then companies should not be scared to share salary info.

We do need to close the military wage gap. I had to work harder in the military to get paid the same as the females. Males and females compete directly against each other for the same promotions which determine our pay, yet the physical fitness standards used as part of the promotion criteria are much harder for males than the females. 99% of the time if any male performed exactly the same as a female on his fitness test, he would receive less points towards his promotion. We need to fix this.

If women in fact competed head on with men, your point would be an excellent one. By working for less, they would be undermining men's wages. But women mostly prefer to work in jobs which men shy away from, and shy away themselves from a host of jobs: dirty, dangerous, technical, or lacking people contact.

Clearly, The Equal Pay Act Of 1963

Something should be done about the *longevity* gap

The evidence is omitted, how often women are not involved in business deals yet still get a cut of the profits and noone is allowed to speak out, because they are women and get carried over. Women in fact work less hours and get paid more for men. Men also work harder for the same job, women socialize the workspace and usually men have to do other details, like any lifting or drive further distances, women get the less threatening appointments etc...

Its because our society is trying to fix a gap that does not exist, and by trying to fix the imaginary gap they are in turn creating an actual wage gap, and its not women getting the short end of the stick in this gap; its men.

'Can men have it all?' When did you last hear or read that phrase? Never is my answer to that question. Men know that to get A you have to sacrifice B. It is only women's aversion to accepting consequences and their greed that causes them to make the usual statement - women can have it all. Incidentally, if women succeed and have it all, what is left over for any others?

actually quite a few people do realize that. the problem is if you bring it up you are yelled at and labelled as sexist. also don't forget women can assault men, but men can't hit women. also when a woman works 5 hours and a man works 9 hours of course the man will make more money - he worked longer hours

President Obama's remarks are demoguery, plain & simple, playing to the feminist gallery. Also, the wages not paid to women because of alleged discrimination are paid to someone else: as wages to men, interest, profits, or taxes. If women are paid more, somebody somewhere in the economy has to be paid less. It is not evident that ending "discrimination" will make the average family better off.

no i don't think companies are discriminating against women and getting companies to share salary information is like me making you put a camera on you 24/7 just so i can watch you and find some excuse to harass you !!
