This is why Lucas' movies had all the best designs.

By using models of real war machines, they gave a sense of realism to the science fiction war machines. They also used WW2 movies and battles as inspiration for space battles, with the biggest space ships launching dozens of fighters like aircraft carriers in WW2. The cockpit of the Millennium Falcon resembles the cockpit of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, the heavy bomber that dropped nuclear bombs on Japan.

Then they used high definition cameras in extreme close ups to make the models look huge. The cameras were digitally guided in precise routes that could be duplicated again and again. It was a very early use of computer technology, not to animate a scene but to guide the cameras.

It's unreal the craftsmanship of the people that they could make these ships from just model parts. Thank you 🔥🔥🔥

In the model kit world, it's called studio scale modelling, exact models created with the same kits, the film studios used, it's also incredibly expensive, since some of those kits, now are out of production.

Imagine looking at the Millenium Falcon's engine only to see a WW2 German panther engine stuck inside it 😂

They would even recast sprue trees to get more of the parts they need. Eventually they would create a custom mold of maybe 20 peices of one part that was popular to use in the models

When it was first conceived, it was kit bashing.

Now, there are proper kits for them. I found that funny.

It's claimed that they cleaned out every hobby shop within 100+ miles of the studio.

This is called KIT BASHING. Where you bash all the models together and see what happens.

I hate and love. Seeing the actual models. At conventions. Or displays of Star Wars. Because I recognize the parts they put in details. Because I made those kits! I am huge model maker. Mainly WW2. And I get to nit picky instead of admiring the work! UGH. But what an amazing job they did!😍🤩😎😃😉

Many of the effects team were using techniques and skills they had developed while working on Gerry Anderson productions. It was on series such as Stingray and Thunderbirds that techniques like using model kit components, dirtying down models to look used and weathered, high speed photography, new ways to force perspective and, of course, really good explosions were created and developed.

Anderson alumni revolutionised special effects in movies and TV. Most of the big franchises, Star Wars, Superman, Bond, etc, employed ex-Century 21 experts.

There was one wall of the warehouse with boxes of model kits stacked 6-8 feet high.

Also, the reason most ships in *Star Wars* have a split is because it made it easier to create the models and put them together. They could make 2 molds, one for the top and one for the bottom. Create a middle section of "greebles" (odds and ends from model kits) to join the 2 halves. It is also why the Death Star has trenches.

Also known as kit-bashing, first used on Gerry Andersons tv shows model fx in the sixties....

No shade, I'm just coming back to those videos for the insanely exaggerated accent. Absolutely love it.
Also, The feet of AT-STs are made out of Vader's TIE fighter bottoms. The only Star Wars toy piece in a SW model. Meta.

Now, they sell hundreds of boxes at a time. At least before Disney.
