This Console Generation Has Been Almost Completely Useless So Far

This November, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will both be four years old, which means both consoles are a little bit past the halfway point in their lifecycles, which is absolutely nuts to think about, because the both current-gen platforms barely have anything to show for their four years of existence so far.

Usually when a console is entering its fourth year, it has well and truly hit its stride, following up on consistent past support with a steady string of new releases to build up a healthy library of games that cannot be played on previous generation consoles. That, however, has very much not been the case with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S so far. Here, we talk about all of that and more.

This is the absolute best time in history to be a backlog gamer. Physical and digital sales make it so easy to catch up on anything you missed. New releases are expensive and ship unfinished. Enjoy your library and save so much money instead.

You know there's an issue when I have to buy old ps4 games that I never played to find something new to play on my ps5

I wish we had ps2 era creativity and enthusiasm with modern hardware

Games take 5-7 years to develop now and these companies want to put out new consoles every 10. It’s just not sustainable.

Amazing no one mentions nintendo thriving on 7 year-old hardware that was already old when it released.

Worst generation of games ever. Live service bag chasing is killing gaming.

In my 40+ years of gaming, I’ve never seen things so bad as they are now. Greed over Art.

The biggest problem with the gaming industry is that graphics require far too much money and time to be created, resulting in very few games being released. What was Nintendo saying since the Wii era. graphics will be the Downfall for gaming and gameplay is much more important. And now the Switch has more than 90 first party games, that speaks for itself

We need less focus on nonsense. I don't need to see wrinkles, sweat or reflections. I just want 1080p at 60fps with great original gameplay.

It's because all the big game devs are busy trying to make live service games and utterly failing.

PS3/Wii/360 was truly the last great era of gaming for Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. They were so competitive for trying to be the best delivering great 1st party games

I feel bad for young gamers today. Being a child/teen in the 80s/90s, it was non-stop and amazing. Every 4 years was a new system, new games and new advances. And each console generation was a MASSIVE leap. There were always 'can't miss' launch titles only available on the new hardware. Always new and novel types of gameplay. If you were one of the lucky ones to get your hands on the newest, you were the envy of every kid in the neighborhood or class. Nowadays kids play the same game for years, like my nieces and Roblox or nephew and Spiderman. Most games are the same: 3rd-person action w/ RPG elements. Gaming is really in a rut the past 10 years.

This is funny to me, because I was saying way back in 2020 that the next gen consoles were rushed to market.

don't forget that nobody could get a console for multiple years unless it was from scalpers for around
$1, 000. Both Amazon and Wall-Mart had no problem helping squeeze us for every cent they could.

I got the PS5 just to end up playing PS4 games with higher frame rates and shorter load times. At least I'm catching up to my backlog.

This has been a great generation… for Nintendo, with the weakest console on the market.

The SSD speeds is the main reason I upgraded asap. Those load times where getting ludicrous towards the end of 8th gen

This has been the generation ruined by catering to "modern audiences".

I blame the publishers/developers. These companies need to scale back budgets and sales expectations on their AAA games, and get back to making GAMES, not soulless microtransaction-riddled live service programs designed to bleed customers dry.

Completely useless for the player. These gaming companies now charge way more and produce way less with way less creativity and passion
