Using Mid-roll Ads on YouTube

If you’re an eligible creator in the YouTube Partner Program, you can use mid-roll ads to monetize videos longer than 8 minutes. When using mid-rolls, having the right placements can improve your earning opportunities and ensure a great viewer experience. So let’s walk through how to use mid-roll ads and some best practices for using them.

NEW: Starting May 2025, we are tuning our ad serving systems to shift more mid-roll ads at natural break points and fewer ads where they may feel interruptive or cause viewers to abandon the video, like in the middle of a sentence or action sequence. Our ad serving systems have always tried to serve ads on natural breakpoints to balance revenue with viewer retention and this change is a refinement of our existing model.

We'll also be placing additional automatic ad slots to existing videos with manual mid-rolls uploaded before February 24, 2025. If you prefer not to have automatic ad slots on existing videos, you can opt-out in the Earn tab of YouTube Studio anytime before May 12, 2025. However, we recommend improving your manual mid-roll ad slots and/or adding automatic ad slots before we tune our ad serving systems in May to avoid potential loss in earnings.
