How to split a log into bow staves

I know this is a simple concept but there are a few tips and tricks I have learned over the years of splitting logs that can help you get the best stave out of your log. Planning what kind of bow you are looking for and what you want to make starts with the tree you get. I have found that wherever I am, I look at the trees to see which would make a good bow. I have some cherry that was cut 5 months ago but I have not split it into staves. It is under shelter. Am I OK leaving it or do you recommend splitting?
