How Mormon Leaders Manipulate Meaning

The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its own unique idiolect. And sometimes that flows from our unique nouns into commonly understood words re-defined by church leaders. Let's take a look, shall we?

I was raised Mormon and while I resigned for many reasons, my integrity is ultimately why I left. I kept the good beliefs of just being a good person and left all the gaslighting behind

As an exmo, one of the biggest problems I have today with the church is watching its leaders say, “obey/listen to/follow/ never question Jesus”. Since they speak directly for Jesus, they really mean “obey/listen to/ never question ME.” Now that I realize that, I can’t unsee it.

"Integrity" in the church is equivalent to "Loyalty TO the church leadership, regardless of the gospel".

I understood integrity when I was in the church the same way I do now… it’s that definition of integrity that forced my hand and led to my resignation when I discovered that the leaders of the church were not being totally honest.

I was taught that I should follow the rules and be a good neighbor and citizen. I never perceived any kind of disconnect between the will of God and my being a completely truthful person. And it NEVER occurred to me that the leaders of the church might be doing something behind closed doors other than what they were teaching me.

It makes sense why though… I was taught that they were above criticism. I was specifically admonished that finding any fault in them at all was sinful. And it didn’t occur to me that something was off because they seemed so perfect and “Christ-like.”

The deception still stings. I still can’t believe how naive I was.

The sad part is that when I was active in the church we did our upmost to live by such things as honesty, integrity and other values. Sad to see that the General Authorities consider themselves exempt from this because of purported marching orders from God. Keep up the good work, Nemo!

Brilliant and concise as always, Nemo. Any organization that redefines the word “truth“, then defines how to decide if something is true, then casts anyone who has a different definition of truth, as antagonistic, will need to check the dictionary for the definition of “cult”.

No wonder that, of the age group 35-55, already half the members have left the church. Thank you for your part in establishing the facts and clarifying the reality. For all human beings, agency is only possible if they can access true information and give unmanipulated consent.

Oh say what is truth? It's something we can always count on Nemo delivering! Thanks, as always, for your excellent work!

Having been born into it, I decided to do an experiment. I placed myself in the boots of one who had never heard of Mormonism. Result? I'm now a free agent.

The way Nelson ducks out of the hat so quickly and puts it aside always gets me. "Wow, what did I just do, out my head in a hat? I'm a doctor."

Thanks Nemo for trying to hold the church accountable. You’re doing everyone a service by calling out the leaders when they need to be-which, lately, is all of the time.

Again, quality work Nemo. Concise and clear. This is why I follow your channel and am a monthly donor. Yes, I went to church today and enjoyed your work. I’m not buying into re-defined terms and the meaning of words. I fully recognize the importance of truth (it’s classic definition).

I have slowly been shunned by online LDS friends and family as I post subtle criticism of the LDS church using my real identity, while my local area increasingly sends missionaries and primary leaders reaching out to my minor children. Hey, everyone, we are OK, happy and content with our full knowledge of the truth of gospel claims. Carry On😂. Thanks Nemo!

This is such an excellent presentaton, Nemo, thank you!! By the way, every time you show a clip of the church leaders talking, I actually get a visceral reaction, including nausea.. seeing Nelson's pasty white face with that quiet voice asking if they know what a "prophet" is, like he's addressing a kindergarten class.. I'm telling you I've still got some PTSD from being there for so long.

Integrity means living what you believe. The opposite of integrity is hypocrisy.
