I chose to solve it by expressing it in exponential form. X^1 = X^(1/4) Since 1 and 0.25 are not equal, the only possible solutions are zero, which has no value, or 1, which reproduces the same value, for all powers, positive or negative (assuming we count only real solutions).

Hello Math Sorcerer, love these little videos. Why are we not considering complex solutions to this( cube roots of unity)?
Also, which book should I pick up for calculus after completing the Early Transcendentals by Stewart?

The two complex solutions are anyway false (exp({120, 240}°i) since you can't divide 120 and 240 by three and get the same numbers (40, 80 resp.). But 1 and 0 are solutions.

Radical expressions should be eliminated from algebra.

Jeepers! Whenever you have a X to any power equal to X, well, that can only happen when X equals 1. Since the powers are even roots, well, that means that we can forget about Negative 1. I wish I had time to watch the video, but I just spent a half an hour scratching my head over another one of the Wizard's Videos. Take Care! I have my own Channel's work to do!
