Together, we explore the use of ketogenic diets, the impact of drugs like Ozempic, and the need to reassess our approach to diabetes management.

In this episode, we discuss:
The evolution of diabetes treatment
Assumptions about diabetes and the influence of dietary choices
The role of calorie intake and exercise in diabetes management
The limitations of current drugs used to treat diabetes
Clinical trials and their impact on our understanding of diet and health
The choice between drug therapy and dietary changes in managing diabetes

Join us to discover how bias and ingrained beliefs can obstruct progress in understanding how to treat this chronic illness.

I'm a 69- year- old female. I went hi fat low carb after reading good calories bad calories in 2010. In 2 days I had what they call Atkins Euphoria. I hadn't felt that kind of energy since I was a kid. So much energy because never in my life, since childhood, had I ever gone a single day w/o eating quite a lot of carbs. In 6 to 9 months with zero exercise I (then age 55) went from 168 to 142, which was my marriage weight. I've stayed at my marriage weight now for fourteen years. Ditto my husband. To my surprise he picked up the book and read the whole thing and we eat the same. He got down to his marriage weight too.

He said something that I also had been thinking which is that unless people read all of good calories bad calories he didn't think they would have the motivation and understanding to do what we did.

I admire Gary Taubes. He was thinking out of the box when he wrote "Why we get fat" and "Good calories, bad calories". With that he paved the way for a completely different perspective on nutrition (in modern times).

"Look, diabetes specialists, of all people, know that a calorie isn't a calorie, except for Peter Attia". 🤭🤣🤣 Shots fired (and rightfully so)!!!
Speak that truth, Gary Taubes! 💙

Thank you for this, my son is 3 years Type 1 diebetic and has a pump, he's most of the time 97% in range because he's a fussy eater and we give him a lot of meat, he has Autism, so certain foods and mostly sweets cause him sensory issues, he won't eatem thankfully, he's 17 now, a healthy weight because he is consistent, this was a very interesting interview. I am always learning.

I went low carb/ sometimes keto/ sometimes no ketosis/high fat. I lost over 30 lbs at 167lbs now. I stopped taking insulin. my A1C is 4.9. My blood pressure are better then ever, even though I still am taking Blood pressure meds. My formula is simple, Don't eat the sugar/carbs and I won't need the insulin. Example meal: Chicken breast and Salad with avocado, cucumber, blueberries and home made vinegar and oil dressing. I also skip breakfast. and try and eat 6/18, so I get an 18 hour fast every day.

My Dad cured his diabetes (and lost weight) simply by going on a whole foods low carb diet. It worked great until he went back to eating normal American food.

I LOVE this discussion. As a former RD, CDCDS (30 years) I NEVER liked the way trendy diets hijacked progress toward eating whole foods.

A beautiful eye opening episode as always and it solidifies my belief as the Insulin that has been the sole cause of me being unable to control my blood pressure as well as gaining lots of pounds. I remember a conversation I had with my PCP at Kaiser here in Oregon as I requested based upon my personal research about the Insulin and he said and I quote “That continuing to be on Insulin will help you live longer”. I was falling due to hypoglycemia and eating more and thus gaining weight. I took complete control of my health stopped using Insulin went on strictly plant based diet worked out every day and lost around 64 lbs and got myself off any meds. A great show Dr. Hyman as well as the research work of your esteemed guest 🙏🏻.

Recently diagnosed, early 60's. It seems to be a tremendous amount of work just to eat and balance everything out. (6'2, 220 ponds) I have recategorized food and treat it strictly as medication. I have cut out all restaurants with family and friends. My wife will text me when coffee is being served and then I come into the restaurant and join the group. I am really not the type of person who looks for substitutions of foods. For example, nutritionist says instead of bread have this or instead of that have this. I asked for a list of things I shouldn't have and just cut it out, no substitutions required. The only thing I eat is grilled chicken and salad with vinegar and oil for lunch and dinner every day since I have been diagnosed. It has been a lot less work, and it has actually been working out pretty well. I look at food as if I am taking some type of statin, nothing more, and don't give it a second thought. I am in awe of folks who can go do all the measuring and preparation of different foods, and going to restaurants and creating plates they can eat safely. Granted, I am only 7 months into the disease, but wow, what a lifestyle change. Be well, everyone, thanks

An excellent interview that captures quite a bit of Gary's book, which I thought went into too much detail about various research studies/writings about the treatment of diabetes over time. A plus of this interview was it covered more of how an individual could treat diabetes through diet. To me (not a medical type), it seems obvious that a good way to reduce blood glucose is to simply take in less of the foods that raise sugar, apparently not what became conventional wisdom.

I hope Gary writes more general interest articles on diabetes and its treatments (and role of diet) similar to his "Case Against Sugar, " along with future books that emphasize role of diet in health.

Story of my life. With happy ending for now. Diet LcHF worked for me even I diagnosed as T2D in 1996. It changed everything about my life not just BG or weight or A1C. I am off 7 meds and many devices like CPAP. The only device I have is CGM. And its data guide me.
