As a former Air Defense officer, I can tell you that the Iron Dome system is not made to defend against missile attacks. The primary function of the Iron dome system is to counter mortars and small rockets, not missiles.

No Defence system is impenetrable. Some missiles are going to get through no matter what. As someone else in the comments said, they picked and choose which missiles to intercept, and which to let through. Even then, there is no 100% guarantee that the intercepts will be perfect. Plus, with the cost of the intercepting missiles, it is more cost effective to let those missile falling into empty areas get through than waste a missile on it. Now we have to wait and see how Israel will react. The Iranian government officials should start checking their TV remotes for explosives.
