the greatest sax soli in existence

Transcription of the sax soli from Cruisin' for a Bluesin', by Andy Weiner, as played by the Maynard Ferguson band. Here Laurence Mason does an incredible job of playing it, so please go check out the original video of his.
I hope you all enjoy this one, it's one of my favorites that I've done so far.

At my senior year of highschool jazz band festival, my school’s rival jazz band played this soli perfectly leaving my bari player intensely depressed

I remember when our jazz band conductor in highschool passed out the sheet music for us to play this. We tried sightreading our way through it one time... It did not go well... Conductor said nothing just a slight nod with pursed lips, handed out the next chart and we never spoke of it again. We never asked why we didn't practice that song again.

My freshman year we pulled out this chart. That sax line was one of the most gifted groups I had ever met and it was amazing to see them play this flawlessly every time.

NO WAY I LITERALLY WAS TRANSCRIBING THIS LAST YEAR (and I gave up) BUT IT'S SO COOL TO SEE IT DONE ALL THE WAY THROUGH!
And also props to you! I know from experience this is a freaking beast of a sax soli to transcribe

This was such a fun thing to perform and record. I always had a great time playing that bass line. And Maynard enjoyed getting a bit of a break while listening to us work!
Great job on the transcription and recording!

The true GOAT sax soli has to be Three In One by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Absolutely burning.

Calling all parents, that is some serious tone I’m hearing

I read the title of this video and in my mind I sarcastically thought “Yeah sure… whatever”

I now sincerely apologize for my ignorance 🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

just want to appreciate the accuracy and precision of his playing considering the tempo and all the syncopation . Not to mention how impressive the transcription is, and well spotted with that Donna Lee lick lol

Nice! Reminds me of the early 70’s album “SuperSax play Bird”. Charlie Parker solos arranged for 2 altos, 2 tenors, bari, and rhythm section.

This is why tenor is the best, gets melody and bass groove, best of both worlds
