The world was a different place in 2003. The choice between film and digital photography was not just being made by photographers, but by normal everyday people for their everyday snapshots. Let's take a look at the choice the someone in 2003 might make.

In the video I compare a Canon Sure Shot 80u film point and shoot camera with an HP Photosmart 935 digital point and shoot camera. Fujifilm 200 film vs a 5.3MP sensor behind Pentax glass. We take a look not just at the results, but the experience of shooting these cameras as well.

Have to say the film shots came out best overall with the colour and retro look in my opinion. The digital definitely has the convenience factor though which is sometimes hard to beat. Great to see you back making content again 🙂

Man, it’s great to see you return to content creation. Such an in-depth, superbly edited video showing the comparison. I do prefer the look of film more than digital. Seeing you develop film was a throwback for me (as always) to when I worked in a photography store and did that. “1 hour photo”…that’s a term I haven’t heard in ages, but a nostalgia trip for sure. Phenomenal video man!

Woah! This is a really good rundown and a great take on the always regurgitated film vs digital discussion. Absolutely awesome, plus, I did get to shoot both of those cameras so I do understand the actual joy of using them, this brough back great memories. Fun fact, my dad used to own the same HP camera, it once fell on a lake and he quickly got it dry, he then repaired the battery door and even put a nokia rechargeable battery on it and we used to call it the aquatic camera.

Man this takes me back when I remembered one of my family members bought a Digital camera back in 2003. Seeing it for the first time as a kid was awe-inspiring for me. Just to see that there's a tiny digital screen that has a menu AND you can navigate it was really incredible. My family back then mainly used those classic Kodak cameras for the majority of our picture shots to slap on to our photo album and it really was the norm to take your rolls and take it to a store to have them processed. It may sound like an inconvenience by modern standards, but if you went to a grocery store that allows you to send photos that need to be processed, it wasn't that bad. We really have come a long way since then.

But thank you for making this video man! This certainly was a nostalgic trip!

You and I definitely differ on what qualifies as an “Epic” night out!

I’ll take the digital all day long. Sure the film looked better, but the shooter who carried a cheap consumer film camera often took blurry, unfocused shots of thumbs. I was that person. I had no desire to lug around a big cam and less desire to learn how to use it, but lots of disappointment when my pics came back bad.

Along comes a digital cam that might be subpar (only on direct comparison), but I I’m instantly sure I captured the moment my kid took his first steps. Like a Polaroid, but forever!!

I would love to see you jump in a Delorean and go back to 1816 and compare the first camera to a canvas.

Overall I sighed at the length, but was ultimately entertained the whole way and interested in the narrative. So great job.

Took a while to get around to this video, but I love the setup at the beginning. Everything from the Vice City reference to Matrix: Reloaded it perfectly frames both the video & the culture at that time. I remember selling a lot of these early digital cameras from working at Best Buy during that time & it really shows how that era was transitionary in so many ways for photography.
