Revisiting the most hated Windows version

Windows 8 released in 2012 was an OS that future generations will learn from on how to not design operating systems. Making a touchscreen based UI for non-touchscreen PCs is not a good strategy.

Windows 8 looks beautiful... In tablets.

Windows 8 was my childhood. My old Toshiba Satellite C850-B990 came with Windows 8 Home Single Language and I remembered being a huge fan of the design. Even though it looks more of like a OS for tablets. When you are on the "Desktop" mode, you can do all of your desktop apps. I didn't even hate the start menu because of how beautiful it was. It was more colorful and less bland compared to say windows 10. I only upgraded to Windows 10 in mid 2020 when I could finally format my family's laptop but dang I took a while in windows 8.

Windows 8.1 was the best OS ever made except for the fact that many people didn’t know how to operate

Windows 10 to Windows 8/8.1 was almost what Windows 7 was to Windows Vista. The this is Windows 10 isn't much better OS and with Windows 11 failing people switched to "perhaps we judged you harshly, Windows 10".

I personally never switched to Windows 8. I had too much good time with Windows 7 and had to reluctantly upgrade to Windows 10. When I actually used Windows 8, I couldn't really find words to describe how horrible it was. Now thanks to Linux and MacOS I can.

Windows 8 UI couldn't work because of Windows legacy stuff. Like say we install some programs and they create a bunch of folders with with even sub-folders in them. It was okay during Win95/XP times, but by Windows 7 it was tedious at best. At least the UI was designed around it. Not so much with all those giant icons. What it should've been is simple program icon to execute programs from start menu, if you don't like clutter desktop with program icons. This is where GNOME or MacOS UI made it easy to manage and navigate even back when Windows 8 was still in active development. The experience of install Windows programs can recreated using WINE and you will have a mess of folders and icons to manage. Even today Windows 11 is using similar idea, but it's still limited by remnants of older Windows releases, specifically Windows 95.

As for portable devices I tried using Windows 8 and 8.1 with few different tablet devices and almost all of them had the similar problems. My main problem was the UI. It was too small to manage by comfortably. Windows 8.1 was a little easier for having start button at least, but in general if device doesn't have large screen or attachable touchpad or mouse, you will have troubles navigating small menus and even smaller icons. One thing I should point out is, that I didn't use tablets long enough to see if there was settings to enhance the experience.

Windows 8 is bad because no start button, but 8.1 fixed it. But both are much better than Windows 11.

Not to mention, I recall when Windows 8 was new, my laptop would constantly suffer from drivers (mostly audio) just randomly breaking, forcing me to sometimes unplug and plug the headset in, or even having to restart the drivers for it to work again. Once I upgraded to Windows 10, the problem is vanished. So on top of the UI being clunky and annoying for mouse and keyboard, I didn't like how buggy some drivers felt with it

At that time, I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to the newly released Windows 8. Unfortunately, most of the drivers and software that worked well on Windows 7 crashed on Windows 8. It was a difficult period due to the lack of resources on forums and communities which I cannot find enough solutions to fix those drivers and softwares. However, Microsoft later enhanced Windows 8 and released Windows 8.1, which supported drivers and software from Windows 7. Sadly, by then, many users, including myself, were already dissatisfied with Windows 8 and had decided to revert to Windows 7.

My opinion, Windows 8 and 8.1 were great, but those OS came out too fast. Microsoft made the similar mistake as Windows Vista.

After growing up with Windows Xp, 8 was actually the first version and I quickly got used to it, I tend to use active corners on other systems nowadays and I probably learned it thanks to Charms bar, it took me a while to forget about it when I switched to Win7 after like 5 years of using 8/8.1

I like how the hinge is broken, sort of. Like any other hp laptop from the time.

It is possible to move between each Metro apps and the desktop by moving the cursor to the upper left corner, but I have never seen anyone using this for some reason...
