I think most people do it nowadays to protect their identity and themselves from harrassment or any real life threat and if something happens to one persona, they can make another to maintain that anonymity.

They do it for protection. Ive seen how some audiences behave, and its scary. Im glad they choose to keep their personal lives private

I think it's because people can envision a creator however they want if they remain faceless, and in a weird way it can make them more relatable the less they reveal about themselves

One word: Swatting.
It's becoming ever so common to be faceless if revealing any personal info can end up doing you harm. Social anxiety and whether or not you are accepted by those across the internet as you just try and do what you love is another reason.

I'd say the faceless creator has been around just as long as the face creator. Early gaming channels mostly didnt have facecames, especially the smaller ones, yet had decent fanbases and communities solely based on their humour and personality

Tommyinnit was threatened before he was even 18
That's insane!
I don't blame people for being faceless it's a good plan 😂

It's also a smart move because 1 they are basically Hannah Montana and are incognito in the world yet rich and 2 the hate comments will only ever be about them or their content not their appearance.

Don't blame them, I'm not trusting NOBODY with my personal info, hell nah chief

Staying faceless avoids creating unrealistic expectations with fans who don't understand the realities of those kind of parasocial relationships. While it might feel to you like the creator you're watching is relatable and authentic, it's still a carefully catered persona they use to dispense their content. It may be very similar to their true self, but it's most likely omitting facets of themselves that could be considered controversial.

This hits different after the Kwite stuff (which was resolved but with the cost of Kwite's privacy)

I miss the casual days of Youtube community when it's okay and totally not privacy-risk to share your personal identity and were just having simple fun topics with no dramas.

Makes sense doesn't it

Next, people will forget about the good parts of relatability .
And someone will do exactly what old YouTubers used to do and people will say : " what an honest wholesome person, many people are fake these days, this person is unique!"

And the cycle goes on and on

Honestly people on the internet can be scary, I remember hearing something about Dream posting a picture where you can see his kitchen in the background and that was enough for someone to dox him

I don’t think it’s limited to just YouTube creators I think you could extend that to actors and music artists take for example marshmallow, daft punk and in a way gorillaz

This is how the internet worked back in the day. We were all anonymous.

I like how the duck just straight looks into my soul with frustration.

True, dream stopped being so talked on the moment he revealed his face, probably all stans got cut in half after that, but when dream used the mask everyone talked about him

The less someone knows, the more the person can imagine the optimal person behind the screen

I mean, it's easier to promote yourself if you've already got a character designed that you can then promote and throw onto merch, and receive fanart of

Plus, unless the character in question is basically an exact replica of you irl, it also helps you protect your identity while still having a voice and presence that viewers can engage with, which is a big Win-Win for you and your audience

Except for the Vanoss Crew, they don’t need masks, except H2O
