The Ryzen 9 7945HX is simply the fastest gaming laptop CPU we've ever seen. In both real world and gaming benchmarks the ROG Strix Scar 17 has other 2023 gaming laptops beat clean and is a great desktop replacement. But there are some problems with the Scar 17 battery life, build quality and some other areas.

Quick advice, while showing battery lifes of other laptops, also mention what processor they are rocking.

Seeing how Zen 4 desktop scaled with eco mode, I'm glad to see the 7945HX lived up to my expectations. Just shame with the chassis and NVIDIA being NVIDIA.

I come from a time where gaming laptop batteries were basically a UPS. So, for them to have even 4 hours is pretty good to me. That being said, I realize now things are different. With things like a G14 getting 11 or 12 hours, it's an area to improve in. But for something that is "the most powerful AMD laptop", I'm not getting it for battery life. I'm getting it for that power! The power supply can just always come along for the ride.

I'm hopeful some of the battery life issues can be addressed with updates down the road, since we know Zen 4 is much more efficient than Intel at the moment.

I wish Asus use new ROG chassis for Ryzen processors too. New chassis comes with 3 fans and improved cooling system. I am really upset to new chassis is available for just Intel processors.

When the Cinebench results came up I audibly said "holy shit."
Damn, the 7945HX is crazy quick!

The backlight bleeding on ASUS laptops has been a plague for a long time. I owned Scar 15 and G17 from 2022, both had awful bleeding visible even in the browser in a bright room and very annoying while watching movies. This SHOULD NOT exist on a premium lineup of laptops. The 1440p 16:9 panel ASUS uses is either garbage or something is wrong with the installation of that screen. Zephyrus S17 I also owned for some time had absolutely zero backlight bleeding and looked gorgeous but that was a 4K 120Hz panel. Also the whole plastic body on such an expensive device is a huge NO from me. The fact they are only using Ryzen in this outdated chassis with the subpar screen is just offensive tbh. That light bar on the bottom also looks awful and you can exactly see the plastic connections inside and the LEDs which has no place in Legion 7 or Alienware. Very overpriced device for it's build quality, QC, chassis, outdated design etc. Also bring back the mechanical keyboard from 2021 SCARs....

I think that the lack of USB4 ports is a bigger letdown than the lack of 10Gb/s ethernet

I'm sold and tired of waiting on Lenovo to release their 7945HX/4090 laptop, thanks for the review.

I have a similar Strix Scar and let me tell you one thing about the thermals, those 90° on load is on manual mode on their software Armoury Crate, and it´s a fixed speed, the turbo option (the automatic/dynamic one) doesn´t reach the 100% of ventilation, so you need to remember to manually change the mode in order to not reach 100° (in my case) and have a reboot of the system because you have reached the temp. limit. The other thing is all the benchs are made on new products but the ventilation system is going to decay and have difficulties to make proficient cooling, because the coolers taking dust, even if you are super clean, the smallest particles will make their way to the center of the coolers and those are custom and really difficult to find stock after 1 year. I´m going to go back to desktop PC for my main PC, I have more options to control the thermals and leave the Strix for backup/mobile option.

the battery couldnt have gotten much bigger, looks like a lot of space but they can only add 10wh without making the laptop annoying at tsa. only another 30 mins of battery life.

Should test silent mode on battery... That's how I usually run on battery power because battery life is more important than max speed...

great laptop, shame that it costs 3280 dollars where I live :/

I agree 100 percent. It's tough to get excited about such an exciting processor when it's put into a machine that seems to be an afterthought.

The reason for poor battery is Chiplet architecture and separate power sucking I/O Die. That's why Amd never released anything beyond 8 cores in laptops. Zen 4 efficiency was good enough according to them, that's why now we have dragon range Chiplet designs now.
Phoenix range is the real deal. Monolithic 8 core on 4nm.

@7:47 at the left side you can see it appears de MMVI on the exhaust vent, if I'm not mistaken is the year where the ROG division started. Nice touch.

Not fanboying here🤯, but I find it annoying that Intel / Nvidia laptop 🥰combos aren’t much dearer than AMD / Nvidia🥰 combo laptops and they often feature higher quality components (some mentioned in this video) such as: better webcam, better battery, better screen (higher colour representation / brightness / 16:10 etc), usually top mounted speaker setups to name a few😡🤬.

Don't forget your 40LB external lithium ion battery pack that takes 12 hours to charge. I heard someone getting a movie in.

Just to be clear - You don't care that much about battery life when you rock desktop performance, 4h is more than enough, otherwise get something else . I have the G751 for 6 years now, and I still love it . I've paid 1500$ for top tier hardware ( stripped down - no ssd, windows and 8 gb ram ), but now you have to pay 2x more for the same performance .
