The new Windows 24H2 update is being officially rolled out to Gaming Laptops and given the gaming performance and framerate increases on the desktop, there's some hope for AMD Ryzen gaming laptops too. So, with this Windows update, do they get better or worse and are the benefits worth getting things like CoPilot installed onto your device?

I don't understand, "is it worth it?". Regardless of performance uplifts, the updates are coming for you eventually. A 10% gain in performance is nothing to sneeze at, and is actually crazy that it's even "possible". AMD has been gimped, and now their processors are even better - sweet. You will have to update to the newest windows eventually, like it or not. So let's take the win.

As an actual laptop expert, I am running 24H2 and there is no issues vs 23H2. Battery life, bloat and everything works as normal. There is no downside to that gain in performance. I am running a 2024 G14 so I don't have a whole lot of power to go around.

Never thought Hardware Canucks go into a tinfoil hat theory and dismiss the gains he actually found.

Like many here i dont interstand "is it worth it" either. Its free? What is there to compare value to? 10% would have been an okay generational uplift for a CPU - and now we're getting it for free! And even if HW canucks seem to hate copilot for some reason, there's no reason not to upgrade windows. Eventually everyone will have to anyway, due to security updates. The negative attitude to updating windows was not well explained and seemed pretty unfounded.

Not upgrading to 24H2 is such a bad take! It's fine to wait a little while for bugs to be resolved but any amount of tangible performance improvement is worth the upgrade, considering you'll eventually have to upgrade when 23H2 is EOL. Most people do not have to worry about Copilot+ features, and if you don't want Recall which at least for now is OPT IN you can still uninstall it or disable it.

You also should have tested 23H2 with September patches that has the updated schedular rather than continuing to use the preview patches.

8:50 you do realise, the Copilot+ features are only shipping on brand new hardware with NPUs having a minimum of 40 TOPS?

If you use a windows MR headset (Reverb G2, etc) keep in mind this update will brick your device permanently as 24H2 no longer supports any WMR devices...

They don't dismiss the gains, just providing awareness that the gains not worthy for so many features "pushed" like copilot and will make the pc work even slower in many cases.

I have a Ryzen 7 6800H and the updates introduced core parking for half of the threads when idling, the battery lasts longer and I didn't see any performance degradation so far.

The testing is very much appreciated. The conclusion is a little strange, as everyone has commented.

I only use windows for gaming and internet browsing on my PC, no personal info, no banking. no personal documents or anything personal. I have a Laptop with Linux for that.

Strange that you say the KB5041587 update wasn't pushed to your laptops, I have an older Ryzen laptop (5800H) and I got that update and it was installed on the 28th of August.

Does the Zen 3+ based Ryzen 6000 series also get these improvements in Win 11, because you mentioned Zen 3 and onwards architecture based APUs get performance buff?

Because I don't see most channels even consider 6000 series due to it being exclusive to mobile chips. I have a Ryzen 7 6800H but I'm using Win 10 cuz I don't like to use Win 11 due to its issues at release.

Yes! A laptop I have! I got the Omen- finally, I can relate to a laptop video from you guys lol. If you guys find the omen 16 on sale, it really is the best of both worlds. Awesome gpu, and apu in one. I had a lightning in a bottle moment when I got it on clearance for just over $1k. Now I that I want one for the gf, I can't find it in stock anymore lol

So since I'm using r5-5600h (zen3), it isn't worth updating right?

the only thing I learned from this video is that Windows 10 is irrelevant 😔

did the update affect power consumption and heat ?

is the "Core isolation" disabled on all the testings ? ( 23H2 and 24H2 )

Until Explorer patcher and Open shell fully works with 24H2 I'm avoiding it. Not sure how that will work seeing as Explorer patcher uses files already in the Windows folder 😢

I wonder if the gains would increase if you limit the TDP to ~25W (for better temps / acoustics)
