The real villain in tangled is Rapunzel's real mother, in the original story the real mother of Rapunzel gave Rapunzel away for drugs, because she was an addict, the new mother (the "witch") just isolated Rapunzel because she was scared of losing her, everyone was scared of her and nobody loved her, because in that time woman like her are seen as witches.
