Benedict Arnold (1741–1801) was an American military officer and notorious figure in U.S. history, remembered primarily for his betrayal during the Revolutionary War. A skilled and daring general, Arnold played a crucial role in early American victories, including the capture of Fort Ticonderoga and the Battle of Saratoga. However, his ambition, perceived slights by Congress, and mounting debts led him to conspire with the British. In 1780, Arnold attempted to surrender West Point, a critical American fort, to the British in exchange for money and a commission in their army. The plot was exposed, but Arnold escaped to British lines, cementing his legacy as a traitor. Despite his talents, Arnold's name remains synonymous with treachery, overshadowing his earlier contributions to the American cause.
