Potatoes are an an extremely popular vegetable and one of the easiest to grow and perfect for new growers/beginners who are starting to grow their own veg for the first time. For many years I've always used the traditional 'dig' method of growing potatoes which has always been successful, however, after seeing others use the 'No Dig' method I wanted to give it a try for myself.

In this video I show you the results from my No Dig Potato trial to see if it really is as easy and successful as others suggest. I 'planted' my no dig potatoes earlier in the year in April (Link below) and now it is time to harvest and see whether this method is really as good as other growers say. So let's find out...........

Here are the links to a few videos on the channel you might find of interest:

This channel will help you to learn new techniques for growing fruit and vegetable in a garden or on an allotment and provide some recipes for how to use all of this wonderful fresh produce!

I hope you enjoy the video and if you have any questions or comments in relation to Allotments, Gardens, Vegetables, Fruit, Recipes or any related issues then please leave them below. I will choose a few questions to answer in future videos, so you may get a mention!

I would really like to thank everyone for the kind messages and requests for more videos. You will have noted that I have not posted any new videos since July and this is due to a significant event that happened in our family, which I cannot disclose, however suffice to say it has had a major impact on our lives.

Moving forward, I will be continuing to grow veg, but on a smaller scale and I may start to post new content in the future, but not exactly sure when. I've loved making videos for my channel and I'm so pleased that people are finding them interesting and useful and hope that you continue to watch all of the varied content that is currently available on the channel. Keep viewing the channel and if you have subscribed and pressed the bell you will be notified when I next post.

All the best and kind regards.

I generally use 30 Litre buckets for all of my potato crops, but I will give this a go with a few spare Kestrel and Charlotte’s next year 👍 impressed with how clean they are too.

Hope you're ok Gary, looking forward to your next video. We've had the dreaded hose pipe ban here, which has been seriously challenging in the veg garden but we've found ways of saving grey water, putting out rain catchers (every bucket without holes) 🤣 hope all is well with you and yours.

I got a net bag of Picasso seed potatoes from wilko in February for March sowing on the edge of my lawn and harvest 46lbs of potatoes last week using no dig with straw, grass clippings and horse bedding Very pleased with the results was worried that the slugs would eat them but luckily they didn’t manage to get too many, a couple of pounds at the most.

YAY! I'm so pleased you are happy with the results.
You will be a no dig convert in no time.

If you are anything like me you will travel around in autumn with a rake and tarpaulin in the car so you can gather monumental amounts of leaves for your beds. They are awesome worm food, and I don't care if people think I'm nuts! Run them through the lawnmower and get grass/ leaves combined and it's amazing how quick the compost matures.
Happy gardening Gary.🌱

My experiment worked very well and the no dig ones far outperformed the ones in buckets. Average yield was 432g per seed potato in buckets (3 per 30l bucket, new compost and watered). No dig average was 1.35kg per seed potato, covered in grass clippings and only an initial watering. I'll definitely do it again 👍🏻

Love this Nigel. So would you trial other no dog now you know how awesomely easy and abundant it is? Fantastic Harvest. I tried with straw this year but got so many slugs in my harvest. Need to adapt next year.

I'm considering harvesting mine now just to see what I've got.

That yield was better than I expected! I doubt the method would work for me, though. My land is overrun with mice, chipmunks, and squirrels. Piling up mulch is like building a home for mice, and putting potatoes in it is like bringing them a housewarming gift. I'm trying grow bags for the first time this year; we'll see how that goes.

Those are some lovely looking spuds. How did they taste? I love homegrown potatoes, I have a problem with water logging, so I’m wondering if I plant on the surface and use grass clippings etc., if it will keep the plants healthier. The plants die back before their time generally. I get spuds but sometimes the potatoes show lots and lots of tiny ones in formation on the roots, but the haulm is gone dead. I’m happy enough though as they are truly delicious, unbruised and no blackness appearing on cooking. I will try the completely no dig method next season. Thank you and Love your useful information and swapping gardening ideas. I’m going to try growing potatoes in pots in my unheated greenhouse over winter just for the taste of fresh dug spuds ! Yum.

How will you store these please? I can’t eat that lot before they would normally go bad.
