Was that a reversing ring on the 50mm? I noticed the f stop didn't show on your display which is typical if you reversed the lens?

Now this is how photography tutorials should be done. Awesome! I've already been aware how to get bokeh with my camera and lenses, but your video popped up as suggestion and here is the fun fact... I've been aware of it because you taught me how to do it, with this video a few years. You do a great job to introduce people into photography techniques!

Bokeh originates from Japan and the pronunciation of it is the one you laughed at the most.

Is there any difference between the bokeh effect we get from the both which should u prefer if only bokeh is concern?

Were you shooting RAW when you took the photos? If so then the White Balance does not matter as the file doesn't have any of the settings locked in.

Hi Evan! Just wondering, does the Bokeh only is effective when you use a DSLR? I used an ultrazoom camera and set it on Manual, set everything almost like your setting except for the Aperture which was 5.8F and my shutter speed a little off, it just showed the lights like looking at the stars in the night sky, nothing like yours :(

thanks for the detailed help!!

I had one quick question though.
Everytime I try this effect, I either seem to not get the bokeh in the back, or everything is out of focus. What could I be doing wrong? D:

curious. You don't shoot RAW? i noticed you mentioned the wb, which isn't important in RAW....just learning so please advise!

Do you have to have a camera with a removable lens? My camera (Canon Powershot SX160IS) does not have a removable lens.

For beginners: remember that Bokeh on Full Frame cameras looks different from Bokeh on APS-C and Micro 4/3s cameras. On a smaller sensor, a wider aperture lets in just as much light as on a full-frame camera, but you get less background blur. There are plenty of good videos out there demonstrating this.

And as this video demonstrates, aperture and sensor size aren't the only things to consider. The distance of the background makes a *huge* difference. If your subject is standing with a faraway vista behind them, you can get background blur even at F11. And the longer your focal lenght, the more pronounced this effect is.

One last touch. Having a light source on your subject also helps with foreground/background separation. It can give your subject more visual "value" and create more contrast between the edges of the subject and the out-of-focus background. If you want that effect of the subject looking as if it's popping out of the background, the lighting is arguably more important than the blur.

Don't have a light at hand? Pick a dark background! The effect in this video would have been much less impressive if the door where the lights hang was white. The deep brown really helped the photos.

Would I be able to get Bokeh Effect with the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 ? I'm afraid I'll just get a boring, blurry background without the circles (the bokeh effect).

very good example, thanks!
I want to start shooting better bokeh. I can get the new tamron 70-300 for a really good price (special opportunity) or the 50mm 1.8d which is really cheap. Which would you recommend for a better bokeh?

Does this work for video as well? Like if by doing this method will it transfer just as well to video like a photo?

Proof that having all the latest kit doesn't necessarily make you a great photographer. Creative stuff and well captured.

I've watched this years ago and here I am again in 2015

On the first shot, did you use the 18-200mm tamron? if so, is the lens any good?
Thanks!
