The ULTIMATE Guide For How To De-Power A Miata Steering Rack

***IMPORTANT: This method is only confirmed for 1990 - 1995 Miatas. IF you have a later year car, the methods and/or tooling required may be different. Do your research!

***FOR PEOPLE ASKING ABOUT WELDING THE PINION: In this tutorial, I followed the Flyin' Miata writeup in which they don't weld the pinion (making it more DIY friendly). You can take the extra step and have the pinion welded to eliminate any play in the rotary valve. This is also only the confirmed method for 1990-1995 steering racks, later racks may require different methods for disassembly.

I feel like I haven't done a real tech video in a while so here you go! If you have deleted your power steering I highly recommend doing this, it really makes the steering feel better. I'll be documenting a few more chassis upgrades as well along the process of building the engine for the car (which, don't worry, that series will start VERY soon!!!)

You've made me change my mind! Definitely going to do this on myn, just went through a steering class at school where we took apart multiple racks so im relatively confident at doing it!

I know this is rather old at this point but there is also a quill spring in the pinion shaft that allows the hydraulic spool valve to send fluid to the ram. If you want maximum feed back then the quill spring needs to be shimmed or welded so all the slop in the linkage is taken up and made solid.

You're tutorial videos are top notch. I replaced my water pump, seals and what not, all thanks to your video. Great quality and to the point. Wish your style was more widespread.

I prob will never do this but watched the vid anyway because it was entertaining. :)

I deleted my power steering, this video was super helpful and the car handles like a dream! One thing I would recommend is dialing down the caster when doing this, the same amount of caster you would want with power steering makes it very difficult to steer without it. I have about 3.5 degrees of caster (instead of 5-6 degrees) and it is much easier to steer now and still tracks straight on its own.

The combination of this video and my lack of budget to purchase another depowered rack has given me the confidence to do this myself.

I want to thank you so much for this video. I just picked up a second NA and somebody borked the steering rack really bad. This gives me all the confidence to get in there, pull the rack and disassemble it to see if I can't rebuild it, and if not, at least get a replacement rack to make my steering possible again. I love YouTube and some of the contributors and content creators.

For someone that your average person wouldn't consider a celebrity. Greg is a celebrity to me and I would be star struck if I met him. I mean he's miata dad bro no denying him. Ive done this several times over the years but i still watch this every time I do

I've done this steering rack conversion on an Rx7 FC and a 4th gen Prelude and I have to say it is hands down my favorite "mod". Probably not too much on the Prelude since its a heavier chassis but being able to feel the road helps me to know how to reenact to certain instances.

Cant wait to do this on my Miata when I get it this July!

I never worked on a car in my life, but I do enjoy watching your videos and appreciate you taking the time to show us how to do this.
Maybe one day if I get the courage to turn wrenches on my 92 miata i'll be sure to use your video as a guide. Thanks for the uploads.

A review video on how the driving feels after the change would be cool! Great videos

Doing this as soon as I can! I can already tell my power steering is starting to go and I don't want anymore headaches with it.

THANK YOU. I just bought a 91 na6 miata with a serious power steering leak, and as a result the pump was whining like a chihuahua. I found your video, and over the course of a week de-powered the rack with my dad! Now I have manual steering and love the heavy feel of the steering wheel. Amazing video, thank you!!

Just did this to my ‘90. Took a little while but I’m happy with the results! Thank you for the excellent tutorial!
