$20 vs $200 Travel Clothes: the Ultimate Guide

Clothing is, by FAR, the category of item that takes up the most space when packing, so in this video, I share the absolute most important and best options to help reduce the stress of packing for a trip (whether it's for a few days, or a few months)!

0:16 Capsule Base (Budget)
Werid: when I looked at different countries’ websites, identical pieces were named different things. I recommend going to your local Uniqlo and look for items that are NOT made out of cotton for the best bang-for-buck capsule base items.

1:06 Capsule Base (Best)
I first backed Unbound Merino’s crowdfunding campaign before they officially launched all the way back in 2016 and it has been the most impactful thing I ever tried for travel. Throughout this video, I’m wearing:

1:40 Cost vs Price
The Merino clothes and other travel products that form my one-bag-travel load out have a high PRICE, but the downstream COST is much cheaper than if I needed to check luggage for every trip. That said, don’t let anyone (and certainly not ME), make you feel like you need to spend money - I COULD technically do the same with all Uniqlo items too, but the freedom I feel without needing to do laundry anywhere near as frequently with Merino is way too worth it for me.

2:13 Most Useful
Almost every athletic brand, from Nike, to Adidas, to UnderArmor, and everything in-between offers thin non-cotton full-zip hoodies year-round, and so do stores like Uniqlo and H&M. Regardless, even for hot destinations, this is the first “extra” I recommend for every trip.

3:30 Most Underrated
My UNBIASED picks:
👆🚨 This one linked is just one of many colorways - search online and you’ll find REALLY funky colors
👆✅ Limited time discount code on your first order: MAURICEMOVES

My VERY Biased pick:
🚨✅ First of all, until the end November 2024, take a whopping 25% to celebrate the official launch of the Flight Cap using code: LAUNCH25FC
👆🚨 REMEMBER: Use code: LAUNCH25FC
… to get a HUGE 25% Off for the rest of Nov 2024 to celebrate the official launch!

5:05 Most Impactful
Comfortable yet versatile shoes are SO impactful in terms of packing light because if you pick them right, they can EASILY be the ONLY pair of shoes you bring - as in - the ones on your feet are the only shoes you need to “pack” since shoes take up a TON of space in luggage.

Even though I love these, they might NOT be comfortable for you. When it comes to shoes, you REALLY must try them on.

5:33 Most Stylish
👆✅ Limited time discount code on your first order: MAURICEMOVES

6:40 Forecast Planning
👆🚨 I RECOMMEND searching several online retailers since for some reason, rainwear from all brands seem to fluctuate a TON in price at different stores.
✅👉 The Uniqlo pocketable one is called the “Pocketable Protection Parka” in Canada, but might be called something else in your country.

I tried merino wool t-shirts and I like them, but my choice is Western Rise X-Cotton t-shirt. It dries really quickly, doesn't wrinkle and doesn't smell. In terms of odor, these t-shirts work even better than merino for me. Also, for some reason, people never talk about static electricity with merino. Maybe it's just me, but in somewhat dry climates it's a nightmare. And merino is much higher maintenance and expensive.

Absolutely love your enthusiasm in your videos and how thorough you are with your edc and everything you travel with. I’m excited to try packing very light in the future when the opportunity for travel comes. I definitely plan to just use what I have for now but love seeing your thought process and how thoughtful you are with your choices

We rock almost the same kit with the exception of I have gone full merino on 🧦 socks from Darn Tough and Undbound Merino and boxers from Unbound Merino. At 6’ 250 this has cut my luggage weight by 12-15lbs. Sadly Uniqlo and UBM pants don’t fit me but Patagonia Travel pants are perfect. Love this series. Keep em coming. mahalo 🤙🏽

Last time I went traveling I was in warm weather and I brought all of my merino shirts with me 4 my bag was super light and it was so easy. I did bring a few extra pieces of clothing and still had plenty of room. Merino is the way to go.

My favourite travel pants are the Eddie Bauer Guide Pro pants.

For my longer trips I’ll do 1 regular pair and one convertible pair.

The 2 way stretch makes them super comfy, plus they have a low profile cargo pockets and a host of other features which make them great for flights, hiking and slightly dressy outings.

Just wish the logo wasn’t so obnoxious.

Personally, I think that a compact umbrella is better for most travelers than a rain shell. It keeps more of you dry, it's actually waterproof rather than just water resistant, it's easily stowed, and it's way less expensive.

Well, thanks a lot Maurice. This video is about to cost me a lot of money 😂

After living/traveling in southeast Asia for a time, I found that a neutral color non-cotton sarong was a must have. Covers bare shoulders indoors when air conditioning is blasting, a light blanket on a flight or napping in the airport, etc.. I now have a slightly thicker one (actually a large scarf) that I use when traveling in cooler areas of the world.

Uniqlo is my brand of choice for most of my travels for over a decade. Bought one Unbound Merino shirt to try it out and while I do love its anti-microbial feature, I don’t travel enough to justify its price tag. I’ll want to get a similar backpack next time.

Great video! I really enjoy your videos, because your sharing things you have actually used & give honest feedback on them. I have only traveled with additional check in baggage once in the last 30+ years. I really like knowing that all my stuff is with me, and I LOVE that all I have to do is leave the plane. Your tips & tricks make this even easier. Thanks so much! 👍🏻

I got some merino wool shirts for travel and was SHOCKED when I left my shirt lying flat in the bathroom after smoking a joint outside - which I do occasionally but hate the stagnant, lingering smell. In the morning, no smoke or skunk smell. I was shocked enough I had my wife smell it to make sure I wasn't just nose blind. Crazy.

Thanks for another great vid. I have the original 33l Pakt backpack and love the way it packs and is organized. I thought about upgrading to the newer 35l, but not surenit is enough of an upgrade to justify over spending that money on another travel backpack in favor of variety.

I wish I could do wool but most of my travel is for work where I need branded shirts. These shirts take up most of my one bag. I might start doing hotel laundry like you pictured here so cut down to 2 shirts I can wash every other day.

Thanks for another great video, Maurice. I'm curious how much your bag ends up weighing after it's fully packed. I'm always afraid of straining the back.

I’ve always found that synthetic fabrics are usually the worst for odours. Unless they have silver woven in,
