A suggestion, 10 villains that were actually the good guys in video games.

I loved how Airy’s wings would change each time you destroyed a crystal, almost like like a sick twisted countdown. And if you ever refused to destroy any crystal after the first you could trigger the final battle early.

Gaunter O'Dimm is the best version of this imo. You randomly talk to him in the opening quest, and then he does actually appear as a random NPC throughout the game. Then in the DLC he's revealed to be this wildly powerful demon that traps people into curses

One for me was Wesker in the original Resident Evil. I think people forget that he was one of the STARS members with you to start with but obviously ends up being one of the main bad guys throughout the series

Actually, you can put both Airy AND her sister, Anne! Because the fairy that appears in the opening of the first game asking you to "stay til the very end" and also appears after the end credits saying "Oh, good job, you stopped my sister's evil plan!" is actually Anne. She basically makes you think that she is rooting for you to save the world from Airy and the dark god Ouroboros, and she is... but not for noble reasons!

Turns out in Bravely Second, Anne was also in the service of a dark god, this time named named Providence. She wanted Airy's plans out of the way as they posed a threat to Providence which is why she approached the player for help. She also uses the villains for her own ends and had actually succeeded until the heroes go back in time to prevent Kaiser from abducting Agnes like he did in the beginning. Both fairies are master manipulators but Anne is the better one because she was able to manipulate even YOU, the player.

Bravely Default, in my opinion, was one of the best and probably most underrated twists in a video game.

The cab driver being Kaïn in Bloodlines is pretty much confirmed when you play a Malkavian. The unique dialogue option they get (working from memory here) in a specific conversation with the guy being an answer going something like "So... That mean you are...!" followed by mad laughter. And reading between the lines is enough to understand since basically only the father of vampire-kind causes that kind of obsession and awe in vampiric society.

First one that came to mind was Atlas from BioShock. Turned out he was Frank Fontaine.

The elemental dragon's betrayal in Chrono Cross blew me away. I just spent all of disk one helping them screw me over and had to spend disk two fixing it 😂

Airy was such a huge reveal. It blew my mind that this super fun 3DS game had such a cool villain.

Master Miller from Metal Gear Solid turning out to be Liquid Snake was definitely a twist and shocker for me back in the day. Whole time he was assisting me only to trick me in the end.

I love the secret villains that are the ones you do missions with (so they’re a part of your squad/party/family etc) so it’s like you’ve been battling enemies with this villain through the game only for them to turn around and be like “yeah so I know you love me and all but now I gotta turn on you because I’m the actual villain, sorry” gets me everytime

I was pissed the first time I completed Dark Souls, rekindled the First Flame, only to watch my character self-immolate in a five-second cutscene before it fades to black! I didn't realise that there was another possible ending. Circumstances have to happen just right to even meet his counterpart, Kaathe, who explains that the "Age of Dark" does not mean "evil", but rather is the Age of Man. The gods have shown to be nothing more than self-serving, so why sacrifice yourself for their ends? Every other playthrough since I simply walk away from the First Flame, and get a MUCH better ending. Frampt seems to repent, or at least acknowledges he's lost, when he, Kaathe, and all the other unnamed primordial serpents bow before you.

To me, Bioshock's Andrew Ryan was the biggest plot twist for me with the "Would you kindly" phrase. Blew my mind when I was younger.

I remember having goosebumps when I saw the screen title change on Bravely Default. At the point I got it, you knew Airy was lying, but didn't know why nor what it was about. Such a clever twist and title play that it is the thing that makes me remember that game up until today.

The twist with Airy still gets me. I love Bravely Default

Kreia in Knights of the Old Republic 2 definitely fits this list - although I remember being quite happy I could fight her as I found her annoying from the start xD
