This is literally the quickest, easiest to understand, and most concise video on high speed sync. No 12-15 min video, blah, blah, blah. Excellent job.

Brilliantly simple explanation David, thank you.

Great explanation. Just make sure you have/get equipment that is HSS compatible. A compatible speedlight isn't much more expensive than others so shop with HSS in mind! 🙂

Would you get the same result with a ND filter instead of HSS?

Can I use High Speed Sync on the Nikon SB-700 and my Nikon Z6ii ?

You can also achieve the same effect-using your normal sync shutter speed and a - ND1.2 - 4/f Stop Neutral Density Filter if you set your flash exposure to F/5.6 you would then set your aperture to F/1.4 when using a - 4/f Stop Neutral Density Filter. This gives you exactly the same exposure but significantly less depth of field.?

The problem of being over the sync speed is not that your shutter is quicker than the flash light. The flash is far more quicker than the quickest shutter!
The real problem is that your sensor is no more entirely exposed when the flash pops. This is because of the two curtains moving together over the sensor creating a thin band of light sweeping across it.
If your light band is a the top of your image it's that you've set your flash to pops at the second curtain's closing. The light go through the thin gap and touch only the bottom of your sensor.
This is a quick video that shows how the two curtains move.

When you use the high sync speed the flash make multiple pops very quickly to expose the whole sensor. The thinner your gap is (higher shutter speed) the more pops you'll need to expose the whole sensor by creating multiples "light bands" on your picture.
That's why this mode needs a lot more of energy and why you loose light power: the condenser will not charge fully to deliver the flash burst needed.

However thanks for posting this nice vidz!

I see a softbox was used. Can I use a speedlite with a diffuser to get same effect or is HSS more for direct face on subject using a softbox?

Except that's not how a modern shutter works.
