For anyone who doesn't want to remove the low E, tune it to D.

Two of my favorites:

Open C: C G C G C E
Drop C: C G D G B E, which keeps the upper four strings on familiar ground, and given a bit more oomph to the bass register

"Ostrich" tuning is most fun. D-D-D-D-D-D. Some Ds are a bit tight and tense. Some Ds are floppy and loose. With an acoustic you wan't to bend the Hell out of the loose Ds for a cool Indian Sitar sound. On electric you need huge amounts of reverb and a tremolo cranked at maximum volume.

Most alternate tunings used by Soundgarden are fun to play around in. Also +1 for baritone guitars, I got an ML1 modern and it changed my world. Such an underappreciated instrument.

I just love drop D for how soft it can make songs. Everlong is a perfect example- there's some beautiful soft, slow and low areas where the D string adds a sort of rumble under the chords. The chorus uses it to get some more bass for the powerchords. Best alternate tuning, by far.

I get Keith Richards didn’t use the low E string but it’s easier to just drop it to a D and use it as a drone note it’s also killer for playing with a slide

Here are my favorite tunings I've sort of stumbled upon through my playing with weird tunings.

6 String:
D-A-B-D-A-B (good for Thursday style emo)

7 String:
F-C-G-C-F-G-D (F and G allow for easy minor 2nd intervals)

8 String:
C-G-D-G-C-F-G-D (The high C constantly changes to add more interesting or harsh intervals/adding mirco-tones in relation to the F string)

One of my favorites is FACGCE, it's used in a lot of twinkly math rock stuff, American Football, TTNG, Yvette Young, just to name a few.
