So the release of the water caused the water to rise and kill all those people? I saw a video, it said “what really happened” people in hotel in Asheville wanting to get home, then they asked a trucker if any roads they could take, she and a lot of other people were told something from the trucker, it wasnt raining, she ran to vehicle as did the others. She yelled at her husband, go go get as high as you can, he was confused, she said no time fast top of that hill go go! They got up close to the top then he said they should be fine. But then the water came several feet up really fast as they then had to move again and this time the husband listened and went to the top of the hill. They looked down on the Asheville flooded everything under water. I also heard that damn in Tennessee let water out slowly to several days in anticipation so as to not cause flooding. So, is the damn what caused all this? Asheville water rose fast and it was not raining it was a matter of minutes unless the video was incorrect. Would there have been less disaster if they had released early like Tennessee?

So is it "at risk" of breaching or is "failure imminent"?
Great reporting as usual!

yours is the best most informative video i have watched on this terrible situation in Lake Lure, My Mrs. and I have a love for that little town, we always stop there on our way back from Hot Springs. i just pray for everyone's safety. but i really do want to thank you for posting this video, your station is the only one that actually has footage of the dam. all the rest are so far away from where the flooding is. We have a man-made damned lake in my town in Texas. A river runs through it and when it rains a lot, the river authority has to release water so that the damn doesn't breach over the top and risk breaking. Everyone downriver gets mad, understandably, because they flood. Sometimes they will pre-release water if they know a storm is coming. But then the people living around the lake get mad because their waterfront property levels get low. It's an ongoing feud. During Hurricane Harvey, we got over 50 inches of rain in a few days. Warnings were put out but the release rate from the damn was enormous and videos of it remind me of this video. This is probably why it rose so quickly and with such force there in Ashville. We are relatively flat here, so didn't have the downhill flow or destruction but the flooding was still very tragic and unprecedented! The water literally went down river and into another lake, which flooded homes that had never been flooded before. : (

Those views do not show any water abnormally bypassing the three gated spillways, although we can not know if that was the case prior to this video. The reservoir appears to be just inches below over topping the crest of the dam, however.

Nice, Looks like it's holding! First footage I've seen of the dam, though I hope the release some more footage, maybe not zoomed in at 50x👀

Why bother flying up there if you aren't going to show the water going around the dam causing erosion? The dam was designed to hold back the water and to release excess, that's not a problem. Where was the footage of the water escaping around the dam?

Do you ask me you should think about where the waterlines in rivers would be if there were no man-made dams, holding water back and wherever that waterline would be where you would go from off of that to build your home and house For man to come in and build dams to block water from traveling through a valley and then the county state gives you permission to build a home and a waterline. What used to be there to me you’re asking for problems you’re messing with mother nature, and she’ll always win, but that’s me

Dam failure and dam breaching are two different things to the general public. A dam failure translates to a collapse. This dam was i. Danger of being breached over top by flood waters, a VERY different circumstance.

Looks like it is working. Just think how bad the flooding would be if the dam wasn’t there.

I know the primary spillway is currently open (the gates we see releasing large volumes of water).

I wonder if the evacuation order was sent because they don’t believe the emergency spillway will be able to handle the incoming flow similar to the failure of the Oroville Dam Emergency Spillway being completely eroded when the water overtopped it.

They aren’t showing when it broke. Wonder why.

Why do all these states assume nothing is gonna happen and never make them better till it isn’t .
