In this video I will show you both the HP Microserver Gen 8 and the gen 10 server. What both have to offer as far as ports, hard drives, cpu and what's the max memory I can upgrade these too.

==Hardware/Parts in this video or that I recommend==

I've had my Gen8 Microserver for 10 years. I went from the Celeron to an i5, and ended up with E3-1270v2. Similarly with the memory, went from 4GB to 16GB. Besides the home server workloads, my wife uses it as a workstation, so I added a graphics card to the single PCI-E slot. It's a low profile GeForce GT 1030. Also, I upgraded the OS to Server 2016. It was all quite cheap and the Microserver has been very reliable. Last thing I want to do an is an upgrade to Server 2019. I guess that'll be my last Microserver.

I have two Gen 10 Plus (with xeon processor) with 4 RJ45 ports, to which I have added 32 gb, ILO 5, and a Platform Security Module, and a 1TB boot drive. I find this little powerhouse to be perfect for small businesses. The best thing about this platform is the full set of server features available via the BIOS and the iLo5 port management port. They are a bit pricy compared to some of the smaller 1 litre systems with SBCs ... but they are perfect for a business with 10 -20 employees. The RAID controller is a definite consideration and improved file access times would certainly be expected. I hope this adds to your review ..

Just got a Gen 10 and the main advantage is that it can support NVMe SSDs via the PCIe slots. It even boots from there.
Performance wise there is no major benefit in upgrading, but they are both solid choices.

Does the (Gen8) support 8TB or larger drives??? Think officially supports 4TB; before the release of 8TB drives...

I have a gen 8 and it's excellent. I wouldn't have the gen 10, it's a closed environment. I'll keep the gen 8 with 16GB and my upgraded Xeon.

Interestingly, I have the Gen7 and the Gen8, and the Gen7 also has the dual card expansion option, so they took it away on the Gen8 and brought it back on the later models.

I've been running the gen8 since 2015/2016, I upgraded the ram at the time to 8gb and put an I3-3240 in. Been running with a 20gb SATA drive connected to the internal USB via an adapter and 4 x 2TB drives in raid 5 config running Truenas, plex, sonarr, radarr and a download client. Recently I've decided to up the storage to 4 x 4TB drives again in raid 5, and the ram to 16gb but ran in to a problem. It will not boot with 16gb ram however will boot with the original 4gb and an extra 8gb in slot 2 giving 12gb total (I believe this is an is a compatibility issue with the I3-3240). Tomorrow I should be receiving the Xeon E3 1265L V2 CPU and hoping it will run with 16gb ram. My gen8 has ran flawlessly in all the time I've had it. Just this memory issue to solve.

I just bought a gen 8, Impressively basically new, no more than 5 hours of use according to the seller, but I was wondering, can it boot via the PCI port?I mean install a nvme card adapter with the boot drive on it, I wish to use the 4 drives to storage.

I have had my gen 8 for about 6 years now and use it mainly for running an Xpenology VM and a windows 10 VM but I think I am going to be selling it soon as I want a server that can give me more ram like a Dell R720 as the Gen 8 suffers due to lack of ram expansion IMOH, I swapped out the CPU and put in a Xeon after about 1 month as the performance was terrible with the Celeron and the new CPU made a massive difference. I am running ESXi on it with my VM's running on a 500GB SDD

Thanks for the video.

I disagree Gen8 is better

Cpu upgrade which is pointless if it costs more and even when you upgrade to max it supports it doesn't have an advantage over the gen10 model (reports as well about people having heat issues due to depending which base version you go for heatsink has different ratings)

two pcie as well.

Yes the front panel plus the mounting is cheaper but it still does the job and maybe better cooling wise.

I think maybe some more details would of been better comparing price and how much upgrades maybe also different configs.

I have the hpe proliant microserver gen10 plus v2 that has the Pentium G6405. Is there anyway of using the iGPU on that processor rather than the Matrox onboard graphics that comes with the microserver?

I want to buy one of these to use as a NAS and I'm wondering if someone has had any luck installing Hard Drives bigger than 4Tb (8, 10, 12) with FreeNAS or TrueNAS, any luck?
