What is a surrogate?
• A surrogate is a woman of child-bearing age that agrees to carry a child to term on behalf of another individual or couple, who are unable to conceive or have a child of their own.
• Thanks to these selfless women, these families are able to realize their dreams through surrogacy.

How does surrogacy work?
• Here at Physician’s Surrogacy, we specialize in gestational surrogacy. This involves an embryo that is created through the process of In Virto-Fertilization (IVF), and is transferred vaginally into the surrogate.
• The embryo can be created in several different ways.
– One way is to use the sperm and egg of the intended mother and father, also knows as the Intended Parent(s).
– In some cases, a sperm donor or egg donor may be needed, or even a combination of the options.
• With gestational surrogacy, the egg of the surrogate is not used for the creation of the embryo, so the baby has Zero genetic relation to the surrogate.
• Following the embryo transfer, the surrogate then carries the pregnancy to term.
• Nine months later, the intended parent(s) will welcome their child and have full legal custody when he or she is born.

Why is surrogacy needed? Here are some common reasons:
• Same-sex couple
• Individual male without a partner
• A woman has passed the child-bearing age
• Uterine abnormalities or born without a uterus
• Medical condition or medical treatment that could affect fertility

Who qualifies for surrogacy?
• 21-37 years old
• Has given birth with no major pregnancy complications
• Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 32
• Resident of California, Nevada Oregon, or Texas
• U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident

Surrogacy is an emotional and medical process that has the opportunity to bring joy to all involved. By understanding what surrogacy is, you can determine if it’s right for you and your family.
