In this week’s episode, we discuss three reasons to create your own Lightroom presets and the various benefits they can have on your landscape photography post processing workflow. When I first got into landscape photography I spent hundreds of dollars purchasing other photographers presets and much to my dismay I could never get them to look quite right on my photos and eventually I gave up and quit using them. It wasn’t until last year that I began to think about presets a bit differently with regards to how I was using them.

In this video, I review the three main reasons why I think everyone should be creating their own Lightroom presets. These reasons vary from workflow efficiencies to enabling you to find your own personal creative style. And, if you’re not familiar with how to create your own presets in Lightroom, fret not, we’ll discuss that in detail as well.

Once I began creating my own Lightroom presets, whether they were for workflow efficiencies or creative purposes, my post processing skill set increased and I became more confident in what qualities of an edit I like versus those that I didn’t. I hope this video will inspire you to begin making your own Lightroom presets that’ll enable you to take your photography post processing skill set to the next level!

If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.

Thanks for watching everyone!

When it comes to video tutorials, voice tone of author is so important for me. Some online educators try to act like stand-up comedians and scream for nothing (they think they're cool but it looks stupid and meaningless) which gave me cancer and I can't even listen them with my headphone. I like how calm you're telling your knowledge and I think I just found my new favorite teacher online. By the way I couldn't agree more with your thoughts in this video.

"No big sales pitch at the end of this video"

It's why I love your videos, so calm, humble and passionate.

It's so refreshing to see that, as a beginner/intermediate photographer, that you have your set "robot" settings too.

I found myself beginning to slip down the preset rabbit hole. Then I thought, hey, maybe Mark has something to say about it. I really love this advice. First time I've heard it put this way and it's the best advice I've gotten on the topic. Like you, I was drawn to the idea of presets, but found myself being frustrated more than helped. This is one of the best videos I've ever watched, not just on presets, but on the whole concept of workflow. Thank you!

I feel like i was hearing my dad/teacher helping me get better at my craft without the ads/ sponsor section of the video. I love the set up too, very clean but not over the top congested. Excited to keep seeing videos from you!

Mark, I'm so glad to have found this video. I've been watching many of your other videos over the last week or so, and having started to follow a few other photographers I couldn't help but notice that nearly all of them were selling presets. But you hadn't even mentioned that. I searched "Mark Denney Presets" and landed on this tutorial. Voila! Your answer makes so much sense to me, and just confirms my thought that I can learn so much from you. I'm gonna keep watching, and keep practicing. Thank you so much!

Excellent video, Mark. I just recently discovered your channel and I am currently working backward through your videos. I, too, have purchased a number of preset packs, even though, the seller usually states "This is the only preset pack you will ever need." ;-) I have discovered two side effects: #1 it takes forever to sort through them to find any that are useful, and #2 after installing a large 3000+ pack of presets ...Lightroom ...slowed ...to ...a ...crawl. As a recently retired senior, who is revitalizing my love of photography, I appreciate your very practical approach to landscape photography and post-processing.

Nice video! The internet needs more people like you, enlightening rather than selling and producing tons of not so useful content. 👏

Absolutely spot on with your methodology for the application of presets Mark! There are so many variables with how the photo was originally taken, that a one and done preset application for every edit is an unrealistic solution. As you mention, creating presets that reflect changes in settings you do on every edit to help with speeding up your workflow (and not unintentionally slowing it down instead) is definitely the way to go. You nailed it and thanks for your effort in putting it all together in your video!

I clicked on one of your videos this morning where you talked about using split toning in Lightroom. I have been using Lightroom now for about a year but I never really played with the split toning. Your video was inspirational and made me realise there was so much more I could have done with my editing. I spent the next 3 hours watching more of your videos and just love the way you explain not only how you like to work but also the reasoning behind it. You have most definitely made me think about the way I will work when editing from now on and I will be following your videos on a regular basis. Superb Content in all your posts .. Awesome

A very honest an professional advise. The only Youtube Chanel to tell the truth and not cheating on others making money from scratch.

Love the simple explanation. It hit home for me about the basic changes I always do up front. Save that and then create more building on. The base changes. Thanks!

Straight up, honest talk. Love it. Subscribed. This is the first of your videos I've come across, but I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of the channel. Thanks, Mark!

Awesome video as usual, my friend. I really appreciate the REAL information you put out. Not constantly throwing sponsor names out, or trying to sell your product. I hope you succeed at this! See you next week!

Really helpful advice! Actually, I tried a few prest packs a few years ago and got to the same place: I was waisting a lot of time tweaking several things and got bored. I've been making my own presets for a while now, but almost all of them are complete edits specific for every shoot or light/color situation. I've been making the same "one size fits all" presets that you can buy as a bundle! This "on-point modular presets" approach has been absolutely eye opening! Thank you so much Mark! I'm gonna try it right now, since I'm working on a photo shoot.Greetings from Peru!
