Why Spinal Rotation Is CRUCIAL In Your Workouts

Lots of spinal rotation exercises are done as mobility work, but there’s also a need to practice spinal ration under load in your working sets. This is because it's a part of daily life to twist and turn while you're holding things or moving in awkward positions. Think of getting out of your car, putting your child in their high chair, or simply looking behind you. All of these rotations are common movements, yet that’s exactly where calisthenics tends to fall short: the vast majority of calisthenics exercises are in the sagittal plane, involving little to no rotation of the spine. That’s why I made this video. I wanted to show you all some ideas I’ve used to occasionally add spinal rotation to the basic calisthenics. If you include these in your workouts, along with some light mobility work on the spine, you'll notice a huge functional benefit to all the twisting and turning in your daily life. I hope you enjoy the video!

BE CAREFUL ! As you travel from the top to the bottom of the spine, the spine is set up for less rotational movements. The cervical allows for the most movements, then the thoracic region, then the lumbar region. The lumbar region is really not set up well for rotation, a total of about 5 degrees of rotation for all 5 lumbar segments combined (about 1 degree or so per segment). The ligamentous and bony structures are not set up for rotational and shearing forces, they could wreak havoc on the discs, the ligaments, and the facet joints, for example. The motions lower in the trunk should ideally come from the hip joint. Twisting the lumbar spine on a regular and/or improper way can set one up for a lifetime of

Great video. Rotational work is highly under rated.

I never noticed this before but the only part of your videos that isn't perfect is the voice over isn't mixed or recorded in a great environment, I love the content and legit only noticed because I was watching a video after mixing vocals XD

Can honestly say I never really thought about this. Maybe I do some when I hit Russian twists, but yeah... Thanks for always putting out solid information, man. Would love to see more videos on your diet, mate. Big props from the UK.

Thank you. I agree this is a necessary mobility requirement. Do you think the scorpion push ups are good for spinal rotations?

Love that channel. You really helped me with one hand push ups.

If you have a cable pulley (or bands), I'm a big fan of the high to low woodchopper.

I have recently started my calisthenics journey by doing the 4 part beginner routine. The only problem I have is in the pull section of the workout: after I am done with the bodyweight rows on the parallel bars I feel as if only my neck has been worked on! Can you please suggest a progression to work my way up to a bodyweight row?

Please be careful, spinal rotation can cause slipped disc and other back injuries, especially if you force it or if you do it repeatedly or aggressively
