Part 1 of our 3 part series on Thoracic Spine mobility and strengthening. My team and I have brainstormed the most effective and essential exercises that we give our clients for homework - outside of the treatment room and put it down on paper over 3 videos, to help you understand and do the rehab exercises properly and make them effective.

The essential part is working on the actual anatomical function of the thoracic spine and not just making stuff up and stretching a “sore” or tight bit. And remember the lungs and ribs are the thoracic spine so breathing is key here!

Part 1: Rotation mobility

1️⃣ Book Openers / Bow and Arrow
2️⃣ Oscillation Rotation Sitting + Pole
3️⃣ Oscillation Rotation Standing + Pole

Stay tuned for Part 2: Extension Mobility

Great exercises and the same ones that I’m using in PT. After two back surgeries, mobility and strength are ares I work daily to maintain.

I’ve had back issues for nearly ten years and haven’t been able to sleep for weeks. I keep getting woken up 4/5am with extreme pains between my shoulder blades this really felt like it got it moving again and the pain is less. I’ll definitely be coming back to these videos again and again. Thanks!

When I do the thoracic rotation, I usually make the mistake to force it at the end range. I don’t know I should relax.

On the first exercise on 1 side I can’t even get close to lying
My arm to the floor. I have had costochondritis for 7 years and now wondering if this is why???? I have never tried a thoracic stretch like this.

Is it important to have your face follow your arm on that open book stretch and why? I have had some people who did not want to follow their arm with their face.

I've read that the lumbar spine has little room for rotation and should be more stabile. So If it's important to keep our lumbar spine stabile and not rotate it - how can we make sure that this thoracic movement that you're displaying doesn't include lumbar rotation? It looks like you're also rotating your lumbar along with thoracic area - especially when you're standing.

You go a little too aggressive in demonstrating that 2nd & 3rd, i have had some real deal thoracic problems and notice a slow and measured, observed movement can help someone estranged from the feeling of movement. Slow and deliberate movements help train each new addition til it becomes functional, sure.. its done in the first but the patience should carry into each so neuromuscular control is defined. Slow and controlled is good, otherwise one risks injuring weakened or overactive muscles and not overcoming the loss of sensation.. anyone with years long restriction who pushes towards strength can vouche for loss of sensation being contributory to weakness, we are trying to develop control and that is established via the nervous system. Many able bodied pt’s seem to miss out on this due to having not suffered in such a way. Slow it down, good exercises though
