Mig Welding Downhill Open Butts

Lots of Discussion happens when you talk about mig welding downhill. Personally, I prefer to go uphill on anything 3/16" and thicker. But for open butt root passes in pipe welding in fab shops, downhill mig is pretty common and yields good results provided the bevel, gap, fitup, and land are within scope.
I worked in a pipe fab shop a long time ago and tested on a 8 inch schedule 80 5g pipe...downhill root and uphill fill and cap.
I seem to remember tack welding using tig...then feathering tack welds with a grinder...and then welding half the pipe from top to bottom without stopping.
There are variations of the short circuit mig process where the arc is manipulated electronically to provide even better results on open butt root passes.
Miller has a system called "pipeworxs" that uses something they call Regulated metal deposition (RMD) for downhill roots in pipe.
Lincoln Electric has a process called STT that stands for "surface tension transfer" that is designed for welding downhill root passes in pipe.
Fronius has a process called "cold metal transfer" (CMT) that is designed for specific applications

biggest thing i've learn about your welding... is that what had walked in on the last minute of your video... that is something i have a hard time learning how to weld a family... video might be 7 years old.. but the "stack of dimes of 6010/11" can not compare it. blessed be him with a good heart, and a S.O.B. that can put a weld down smooth.

Dude. You were born to weld. I have been a boilermaker for about 15 years in Australia . I have seen a lot of your vids and while I have seen someone slightly better at any weld you do, I have never seen anyone as good as you across the whole welding discipline. Keep up the great vids mate.

Just wanted to pop by and say, you are doing a great thing sharing your wealth of knowledge here on Youtube. I will soon (pending on entrance times!) be going to college to tackle a welding pathway to learn the trade. I feel like I have already learned so much just watching your videos already. Thank you!

Thanks Jody, actually taking the pipe test tomorrow. Your videos are very helpful, also bought one of your tig fingers a couple years back.. helps when welding boiler tubes. Thank you.

Hey Jody, love your videos, I always watch them all. Up here in Canada (Alberta) we use a process called STT for all almost all of our heavy wall steam piping. Since our oil is so cold and deep in the ground, companies will actually pump hot steam down the wells, and to reduce turbulence in the pipelines they found that using wire roots in the field work best. It's a very similar process to mig.

Hi Jody,
This is way better than my bloopers or any other YouTuber showing off his pet... ;)
Great lesson again...
Thanks, Pierre

Another great video. I just bought a Hobart 210 MVP based on your recommendation, to replace the Eastwood 135 that finally crapped out after 5 years. Looking forward to applying the stuff I've seen in your videos!
