Sad but happens to more vulnerable people.
My cousin stole around 70k from my grandparents in a year. When my parents found out they pushed for charges of theft and elder abuse because grandma had alzheimers and grandpa had dementia. Things were looking good until the day that my grandparents were expected kn court to testify against my cousin. They were brought in by their daughter, my cousins mom, who always did what she could to get her daughter off the hook, no matter the crime. Well, in the span of a car ride from their house to court, grandma and grandpa went from wanting my cousins head for stealing from them, to suddenly "remembering" that grandpa gave cousin his debit card to buy diapers for her baby. Since he willingly gave the card over to her, that absolved her of the crime in the eyes of the court. Ignoring the fact that this was in 2019 and grandpa was diagnosed with dementia in 2015. Apparently the day he gave her the card and the day he testified in court were 2 of the very few days he was lucid. How convenient for cousin. She ended up only having to pay my grandparents 3k, because she had stolen grandmas new card out of her mailbox and activated it herself. She did that because my parents deactivated my grandparents old cards thinking they had been hacked, and ordered new ones. Cousin found out when grandpas card stopped working. So she would "grab the mail for grandma so they wouldnt have to and risk hurting themselves" but was looking for the new cards. She got the card, activated it, and in a week spent 3k on gift cards, snacks, gas, and cigarettes at the gas station in less than a week before my parents noticed the money disappearing again from a card my grandparents never got.
The real kicker was after cousin paid the 3k. She found every and any reason to spend time at my grandparents house yo "help them out." My mom could tell what she was doing. She was trying to be there when the settlement check came in, would offer to take my grandparents to cash it, volunteer to run in the bank for them so they dknt have to leave the car, then either take the cash herself or out it in her own account. So to be safe my mom talked to the post office lady. Since it was a tiny town it was easy to get on friendly terms with her. Mom told her everything that happened then asked if she could hold the chekc when it comes and mom would pick it up. The mail lady said legally she couldnt do that. My mom got sad but thrn the mail lady said "but wouldnt it be a shame if i happened to accidentally forget to deliver it that day? Such an important letter not being delivered on time would be terrible. But as i am 68 years old, I wouldn't put it past me to do such a thing. Andnif i did id just feel absolutely terrible not getting itnout in time, so would feel obliged to call someone to pick it up, hust to make certain it gets where it needs to be on time 😉" and wouldnt you know it, that very tragedy happened. I wish i could have been there when my cousin showed up ine day and my grandma told her about the check that came in before cousin got there to "visit" and how my mkm was so nice as to not only grab it for them, but to also take them to town to cash it and go grocery shopping! Isnt mom so nice! Yea for some reason my cousin (who has been unemployed her entire life) suddenly got super busy and didntnhave time to visit anymore

Anna has stolen so much money from this poor Girl and still everyone seems to be angry at HER for trying to receive justice and get her money back. Instead everyone is babying Anna and finding excuses for her crimes and even being impressed by her, pretending she is some sort of icon fighting for her dreams and grinding. This whole case, including the Netflix Show made me so angry. Honestly, at this point I am simply just disgusted by humans. Feeling sorry for the most annoying and entitled person ever and hating a girl who made a horrible mistake and is just trying to get her money back. My husband said americans being impressed with someone going over dead bodies to gain wealth is not surprising at all. I guess he's right.

There is a crime. If the money was given on the understanding that it would be later refunded, that makes it a loan, and failure to repay a loan is an illegal act. That's way banks can come after you if you fail to pay a loan or a mortgage.

Same thing happened when i was leaving college for internship. My senior who was rich asked for my 2months old refrigerator and many other small things which he said would giv3 me back after 6 months while i was out. But later refused and blocked me from retrieving it. Authorities didn't do anything as i trusted him and i never got back my things. Hard lesson learned 😢

I don’t know if this is supposed to be a judge because I’m visually impaired, but rather than a GoFundMe account he could have suggested that she takes us to small claims court. If the friend admitted to taking the money and promised to pay it back in text, it’s a done deal. But of course, that wouldn’t be dramatic.

Is this common in the US? Like just giving your credit card to a friend? Here, it would be suspicious if anyone even asked for your card because who DOES that?

Yeah, not a crime. She willingly gave her card to the "friend" with the stipulation that they would pay her back. Friend laughed in her face when she told her that she was going to lose her job unless the friend paid the paid the money back ASAP.

You are not the victim, you are the responsible party for using a credit card that doesn’t belong to you
