We have seen that the amount of opioid prescriptions have increased significantly in the Netherlands in the past ten years, and we know that 30% continue to use opioids after they start prescription with all the risks that come with it. Patients said that the role of the health care provider is crucial for the entire process, but they lack some guidance. Like, for example, if they can easily request new medication, they don't get a clear risk–benefit conversation. We found that it will diminish their motivation to taper at a later stage, and patients who received a risk–benefit conversation, we saw that they were more alert and more cautious about their opioid use.
