Now that I think about it, this is kind of the same technique they used in the first Scream movie. At the beginning of this movie, we think Paul is the male lead... until the Blob kills him. Something similar happened with Casey, the first kill in Scream. I even heard they cast Drew Barrymore as her so audience members would think she'd survive the whole movie.
