So far, we’ve looked at the gangster genre film and discovered three different ways to think about genre and its definition itself.

If you haven’t caught the video on understanding gangster films of the Crime genre, here’s the link.

In this video, let’s step back and understand the Crime genre in greater detail as a whole. I’ll discuss the Crime genre using the prototypical definition we’ll use throughout the rest of this course.

Crime happens every day, but it doesn’t happen to most of us most of the time. On the other hand, Crime genre movies treat crime as if it were an everyday occurrence. Crime calls justice into existence in the same way justice makes it possible to define crime. There’s even a philosophical concept that the crime and law call each other into existence.

In our prototypical definition of the Crime genre, it is important to understand that these films are inherently circular in nature. If crime is going on anywhere and everywhere without end, then we need someone who can deal with it all the time.

I encourage you to watch this video from beginning to end. There are movie characters that I’ve mentioned that might ignite your interest in genre analysis and Film Studies. If you have any questions on the Crime genre in particular, feel free to pop in. Post your questions in the comment section so that everybody can benefit from them.

Thanks for watching and let me know how you are finding the Genre Framework series.
