Couldn't you get rid of pressure plates all together by designing a fluid coupling with variable hydraulic fluid control?

Remove enough fluid and the output shaft quits moving. Add fluid and power would be applied to the output shaft. Maybe even incorporate centrifugal pitch control as well?

I just think there's a more reliable way to add or remove power from the output shaft than using friction discs that are costly to replace.
