I fell into Health & Safety by taking an opportunity that was presented to me to be a Safety Liaison. I am now a Health and Safety Specialist.

You gave a lot of good infomation in this video! As you said just keep an open mind on traveling because there is a lot more opportunity on the road. Don't be scared to take a short job when you first start, you are building time under your belt. Most large companies want two years of experance before they will even look at you. Keep your head up, it may take time but it will happen. It took me 10 years before I was able to get my foot into the door. Now I have over 15 years as an ES&H professional. One last thing is always be open to cross training, learn environmental and Industrial Hygiene as you continue your safety journey.

I decided on staying the military for another year because it felt like my only option because finding a job in the health and safety field was ridiculously tough. I’ve been in the military since high school, so it’s all I really know. I tried getting into health and safety jobs, made it to a bunch of interviews, but things always fell apart when they found out I didn’t have the specific experience they were looking for, like in oil and gas or construction.

On top of my military background, I’ve got EPA Type I & II certifications, OSHA 10/30 hour training, and I’m even halfway through a bachelor’s in Safety Management. But none of that seemed to matter. It’s been a real headache, trying to figure out why I’m striking out, considering I’ve got a decent mix of skills and education.

I've been a Union Ironworker for 25 years. I'm looking into changing careers and moving into Construction Safety. I appreciate your videos. I figure my decades of experience will help because I know all the crap people are trying to get away with. 😊
