Regular Ubuntu didn't really work for me but Ubuntu studio and Lubuntu have been excellent. Once you got me turned on to Peppermint I have been daily driving it on many machines.

Live patch is a way to update the kernel and modules without needing to reboot. Security updates are handles by unattended-upgrades which comes upstream from Debian.

Ubuntu, manjaro and fedora have a massive external monitor bug for amd nvidia laptop. Opensuse tumbleweed fixed that bug. So I have switched to opensuse.

You can avoid the propriety stuff for the most part and there are good options, but I agree there are concerns. Be wary.

Snaps are controversial because they take eternity to launch

So are the Ubuntu derivatives going to default to Wayland next iteration?

To me, wayland is not an option still. Peek doesn't work, developer said he has no way to implement it now... OBS snap does not work yet... And I LOVE imwheel on X.org... I hate how much I have to scroll on wayland, speed is too low and there is no way to adjust it. So for me, I will stick to X.org for as long as I can, but eventually, I want to see this more moder thing replacing X.org. I hope it will be functional enough.

Ubuntu does tend to work with Ms closely nowadays, but for some reason, it doesn't bother me. If you want to build business, and accumulate customers, you WILL have to cooperate with others.. For now, I am willing to tolerate it.

Good review!

I'll be sticking with Elementary OS and Linux Mint.

I just don't like the Ubuntu/Gnome way of doing things. I would like the Ubuntu-Cinnamon spin just fine, except that when I tried it out, it had serious crashing issues. I love the Ubuntu-based Linux Mint with the Cinnamon Desktop, though I don't really use it now. I prefer Debian Bullseye/Sid distros, such as Sparky Linux Semi-Rolling and Siduction. I also like getting one of the unofficial Debian Bullseye ISOs from the Debian website, that has all the firmware included, then add the Sid repo. Works great, and I'm a Cinnamon guy, regardless of what distro I'm using. I like heavily rolling Debian, because I like APT. I don't care for Arch-based distros, so I do my rolling with Debian.

The main thing I'm curious about SNAPs is this .... As long as the bloating ( inevitable bloating of software across time) of Snaps DOESN'T..outrun hardware improvements, drivers, Kernel versions/etc....I don't see a huge problem using SNAPs . *shrugs*
