Tim Hoiness, a Forest Service employee in Bend, demonstrates how to deploy a fire shelter that is used by firefighters. The shelter he uses is a practice model. Authentic safety shelters can only be deployed once.

Fire shelters save you from radiant heat, so direct heat would burn it. It all depends on where you deploy. If you deploy a shelter in grass, or brush. You probably wont make it. If you deploy in a bare spot, or create your own spot free of fuel you'll still get hot, probably even some foot burns if you deployed the correct way. But you'll probably live so long as flames aren't smacking your shelter. This is as good as shelters will get for a while. We all know the risks, all we can do is train and learn.

Thanks for this. I just learned about fire shelters while reading a book, and was curious to see how it's deployed.

Its still a good example though, especially for those of us going through training for the first time just to get an idea of a good way to deploy it

I learned this technique when I was a kid watching a scary movie.

Let the yellow tag hang out. Helps out a lot.
Saves you 3 seconds of time.

it's sad they didn't work long enough for the 19 firefighters in Arizona a whole back😢

need a "moving shelter" that can be put on as one runs from a fire to act as a heat shield - a second shelter that is a static shelter like in the video.

and this is the best we can come up with in the 21st century.... see why they're nicknamed 'baked potato bags?

Not very realistic. Need a huge fan to generate wind and smoke so that the shelter is difficult to hold onto.

Our fire environments must be very different. I can't imagine anywhere in the bush I could actually deploy a shelter that couldn't be accessed by a tanker. The active crew protection on a tanker will always be better than a shelter. Not knocking it to bad. Just can't see it working for us

Ok but don't make it green all I can think of is its a green screen or a camping tarp

I'll stick with jumping in a way I am going to let a tiny little fabric protect me from 1500° wildfire.

Wasn't supposed to throw his pack with canteen let alone take it of reach back and PULL your shelter out

Too much fucking about. Fire shelter needs to be deployed in half the time chubby took.

carry your own bodybag? that little sheet is supposed to stop 1000+ degrees of heat for several hours while the fire burns down the forest around you???

sorry but id rather die quickly on my feet, not lay down and wait to get slow roasted wrapped in foil...
