How To Install Portable Air Conditioner - Installation and Review

How to install a Dreo portable air conditioner. Step by step unit installation and review. How to install it and an overview of portable air conditioners and window ac. I recently received this portable AC from Dreo, installed it on our horizontal slide window and tried it out for 2 weeks. I went into it thinking that it would end as more of a negative review but it actually performed really well! I guess portable air conditioners have come a long way since I worked on them back in the day. They are smaller, more efficient, quieter, and there is no need to deal with a condensate drain. In this video I go over why portable air conditioners have a bad reputation and also show how to install one step by step. I didn't go into intensive tests and simply ran it to see how we would feel about it in a few weeks. Not bad. We liked it. 🙂 Now we just need to wait to see how this affects our electric bill.

Really appreciate this video, helped me answer some install questions, especially bc our windows are nearly identical lol
Thanks for making this & being so thorough to cover every aspect, this is the one stop shop. Dreo should embed this video on their website!

I am not a DIY person, and the instructions for my AC sucked, along with the sketches. This video was extremely helpful😭 I really appreciate you doing it!!! Thank you sir for your service 🫡

I enjoyed watching your video. You addressed many of my concerns re the installation. The safety concern of an open window is very important, especially at ground level. Definitely put a metal bar or wooden dowel in to prevent easy access to your home. Keep up the good work. Your detailed video was much better than the 3.5 minute ones that gloss over all the details. I would add that if you are in a windy area, tape any pieces to the window to keep them firmly attached as well as keep bugs out. It is best to set it up for the season and leave it there. I do not recommend moving from room to room, just get one for each room that you spend a significant amount of time in.

Thank you! Loved the video! For the installer/homeowner to address his concerns towards end of video, smalls opening inviting bugs and outside air to seep in around hose bracket. One rememdy would be to run a bead of clear caulking ($5) from the outside around the opening where the hoses expel the exhaust. Then on the inside can use HVAC silver tape or white duck tape around the hose bracket to secure it from falling off or coming loose - would recommend adding the tape after you put hose bracket in place incase you need to adjust hose to fit in opening. Dreo-Manufacture should provide tape with unit! :)

As a safety precaution, instead of drilling into or modifying existing window frame, especially if a renter (not wanting to damage property). I would recommend pick up a piece of wood dowel (cut to window opening or per opening needed) or even PVC (cut to size) and place in bottom of window groove to secure window from moving. To also discourage thiefs from trying to get into home. All my windows and sliding doors have dowel at bottom of window/sliding window for added security. Inexpensive fix for added security. Also can buy the sliding "window locks" too!

Thank you again for excellent video - will check out your other videos too!

Now to buy or not to buy? - you've persuaded me to maybe give it a try....

To secure the window without screws, get an old broom stick and cut it to size so it sits in the window channel. You could/should do this for all your sliding doors. To unlock, simply lift up the broom stick.

Thx, Jay!
I installed a in-wall AC unit in our bedroom several years ago after my wife went to Brasil and found many people do just that so they have cool bedrooms for happy sleeps.
After experiencing the so called “Heat Dome” weather phenomenon last year we decided to get a portable for our living room this year. I bought one for my elderly parents last year during the nasty heat wave and it literally was a life saver!

We have a substantially similar Toshiba portable AC unit, and this video is more helpful than anything I’ve found that specifically relates to our model. So thanks for that.

My primary gripe is that these products aren’t as “portable” as the manufacturers’ marketing literature suggests. We really only need an AC unit for maybe three months a year, and we’ve planned to remove them and store them for the other nine months. However, as this video shows, the window sliders require some “not-so-portable” / not-easily-removable components, such as those window strips and security brackets.

Thank you for showing the modifications sometimes required that may frustrate many people.

9:16 is the piece of information I needed. My unit came with ONE of those plastic bolts. It even shows in the manual it only comes with one so I thought I was misunderstanding its purpose. Thanks for the video.

Cut a wooden dowel or old broom stick to length and set it into the sliding window track. This will keep someone from being able to slide open the window from outside.

Portable Air-Cond. doesn't take much of window space, give you a wider outside view compare to Window version, the installation is simple too. Not bad at all! 😄

Thank you so much for this helpful video! I'm from Florida and thought to myself, man this house reminds me of home and sure enough you're in Florida! I moved to Washington State for grad school and there's NO AC here and I'm DYING with these high temps in the summer. This was helpful and you explained everything so well! Hoping to get one of these to put into my small dorm room. Thanks :)

Nice review, looks like a well made unit. I have a 12000btu different brand with the heat pump which works well, but only one hose which does defeat it's own purpose in summer...draws warm air in through cracks plus exhausts from the room some air you've already paid to cool. It's ok and quiet enough but actual cooling seems more like 6000btu and uses 1100 watts, more $ than a typical 6000 window AC. Drain hose ideally needs to be going outside as orange rust/mold builds up in unit internals if evaporative feature is used. EDIT: I might give this one a go, two separate vents and the inverter technology.

Great video as usual Jay.
As far as the unit is concerned, I can only say “NAH !! Like the old saying goes, “ You can put a tuxedo on a pig ……… but its still a pig”. The biggest drawback of any “portable” unit is that it takes up a huge interior footprint ( the unit, the duct and the bucket ). Yes, I understand that renters can’t make major mods to the install space but if you were able, a mini split would have provided a more permanent solution.
BTW: I’m VERY surprised that Mrs. Jay didn’t give that monstrosity the heave- ho upon 1st sight. She must be a very understanding person. Hang on to her, she’s a keeper😂👍! Stay well.

What happens when it rains and the wind blows in the direction of that side of the house? Wouldn't the rainwater go into the opening of the hose then down into the unit? So since it is portable the hose can be unattached, but would you be able to close the window all that way with the sticky foam that is in place? Looking to get one of these just wondering about the rain part. Thanks in advance.

Jay, I like it brother! You should see your power bill come down. I also noticed the cracks around the vent, maybe you could stick tape over and around those clips to seal it up and like a couple of people said and we did this growing up in our home that had a sliding glass patio door and that was my dad cut a piece of pipe just long enough to lay in the track of the door when closed, in your case all it would take is a piece of dowl rod just enough to keep someone from just sliding the window open. Best lock for a door or window!! Lol 👍. I hope it works well for you and your family my friend, God Bless and take care buddy.

17:14 or place a piece of wood in the window jam to prevent it from opening.

Good installation tutorial. I was able to install my new portable A/C in about 30 minutes to supplement our central A/C that is not able to keep up with the heat in the south.

After 3 mini splits; Pioneer, Mitsubishi, Trane, in as many years, I’ve went back to window units. Much less maintenance & I don’t need a ladder in order to clean the filter.

The Trane was purchased last summer, & stopped cooling after about 200 hours of use. One of the other two drips water inside the house & it doesn’t have a drip pan. Both blow black flakes of mold everywhere.
