The Tragic Life Of Florence Nightingale

The nursing profession is a big part of modern healthcare today and the biggest reason for that is due to the tireless work of its founder, Florence Nightingale. She is credited with giving nursing a favorable reputation, which made her an icon of Victorian culture. Nightingale rose to prominence when she became a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War in the 1850s. But for all her tireless work, she ironically suffered from many health ailments herself. Nightingale was also known to be a recluse and shunned away media attention. The Lady of the Lamp may have helped countless souls, but she unfortunately also had her fair share of tragedy.

Her life was heroic and not tragic. She lived exactly as she chose to. It is disgusting that her life is referred to as tragic merely because it was not a shallow "happy" bourgeois life. Florence Nightingale is a heroic human being who deserves nothing but admiration.

A pioneer and lifesaver and she showed that even in those times proper hygiene and cleanliness could prevent a variety of illnesses God bless nurses and I believe she was called by God

As a RN I thank you Florence Nightingale✨for changing the face of healthcare. Nurses is a calling. If you don't have the intelligence, common sense, and patience forget it👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

I like the way he explains the field of nursing. He speaks so clear and keeps the story to a good standard. Florence probably had mental problems because of the lack of support she had. She wanted to do a lot of things but people restricted her. So, she felt cloistered with her dreams.

I'm 36 and I never heard about her in history class. Her legacy should definitely be taught in schools.

I am italian living close to Florence. My girlfriend lives there. We managed to find the little villa where Florence Nightingale was born just outside the town, in a beautiful relaxing zone. She was a great woman, I have the highest respect for her.

This short synopsis of this heroic woman who paved the way for every nurse in the world was well said and points out important and respectable key points on Florence. I wish this was talked about in school. I think every nurse has a little bit of Florence that lives in them. Florence you have my full respect, gratitude and new admiration. Thank you for making this!

She also suffered from Brucellosis causing weaknesses, headaches, nausea at the sight of food, anemia, and heart palpitations. She recovered from it, Brucellosis is also known as Malta fever, undulant fever. It can take a person out of action for a full year or more.

Great video. I've always felt weirdly connected. Reading about her as a girl is the reason I chose a life of nursing. Very rewarding. This video did have TOO many ads I couldn't skip but ultimately worth the annoyance.

Loved her guts on her calling! My mother always said, " Let those men do that" after becoming nurse, EMT ambulance, and a Female Firefighter. She never once told me she was proud of me. Expectations were her stance til death. Leads to depression.

I've thought for the longest time that she was worthy of sainthood by the Roman Catholic Church. Her devotion to God and humanity was amazing. She didn't have to preform miracles to prove she was a great person, she was the miracle.

Well being an English Staff Nurse, there are a few things you are wrong about, the pronunciation of 'Scutari" the name of the Hospital Florence worked in during her time caring. I understand as a Nurse the hygiene Florence brought to Nursing, it was filthy before she arrived, has improved heaps over the year, her strength of leadership, discipline in the job.
Florence brought status to young woman joining the Nursing profession, especially across the world during WW1&2.
The honour felt in services given as Nurses, the Study, the advocacy for our patients, the compassion.
I worked from age 20 yrs 1977-2009, then retired through ill health. I live near where Florence is buried, went to her grave, to ask the question should I retire.. after 33 years.I very often used sit by her former house, and worked in the community in Romsey Hampshire. Blessings Florence x
