"we found X, copied it, added Y and conquered the known world with it" is practically the Romans' motto when it comes to their military

The Battle of Salamis is the only battle in history I can think of that was lost because of a traffic jam. With SHIPS, no less.

Can't forget about the Diadochi, who accelerated the creation of increasingly large galleys with crews inching into the thousands.

Carthaginian explorers be like:

> Hannibal the Seaman (not to be confused with Hannibal Barca or his father Hamilcar or Hanno the Navigator) sets out to circumnavigate the entire globe
> Has a fleet of ten thousand ships with fifteen morbillion men, women, children and livestock
> Arrives on freshly discovered coast to rest and cook for the night
> Hears spooky chants from further inland and decides it must be the natives, leaves gold on the beach to trade
> The next morning the gold has been taken and 6 seashells have been left in its place, the chanting also continues and a storm kicks up
> The colonists fear that they've angered the gods so they built an altar to the sea god Yam, find a native, skin them alive and sacrifice the remains to the gods
> 30, 000 people stay behind to set up a new city/trade outpost that will survive for the next 5 years
> The rest continue their voyage, repeats until Hannibal gets bored and decides to turn home
> Hannibal's exploits are recorded on stone tablets in the great library of Carthage for all to see and is transcribed by some Greek dude 50 years later

Rome didn’t have time to program naval combat so they just made infantry battles with a ship backdrop.

Entire Roman Navy: gets destroyed in a minor squall
Rome: I can do this all day (builds a second fleet twice as large in twice the time)
New fleet entirely destoryed by 3 Carthaginian ships
Rome: I didn't hear no bell
REPEAT

Fun fact: Caligula's orgy ship was destroyed during WW2, but found later was a carpet from the ship that some family used on their coffee table.

The Veneti (no relation to the Venetians from Venice), who inhabited the Britanny peninsula in northwestern France near the present-day city of Vannes, were the only Gaul tribe noted in Caesar's Bellum Gallicum to have a strong navy, which relied on sails rather than oars. After some difficulties he finaly defeated them when he caught their fleet by surprise on a windless day, reusing the same boarding-focused tactics once used against the Carthaginians.

This is basically USA in ww2 they spammed so many ships it literally dwarfed all other navies combined .
They were producing so many ships that even if japan pulled one pearl harbour type attack every month they still won't harm even 1/4 of US navy . Though romans did it even faster atleast USA already had big navy since dawn of 20th century. From 41 to 45 us navy swelled to almost ten times it's original size.

Other Mediterranean Powers: *Have great navies*
The Roman Empire: *Has a great army*
The Roman Empire after giving their poor sea-battling a thought, _"What if we...just get the army to their navies?"_
