Ancient Roman Special Forces were AWESOME

Ancient Rome had their own unit of Navy SEALs.

Like all Roman soldiers, this secret unit had to be able to ruck 20 miles in 7 hours carrying between 28% and 42% of their bodyweight.

However each of these guys also had a special set of skills.

This was an elite force reconnaissance unit that conducted scouting and special forces operations - and even served as bodyguards for the Emperor.

Composed of the fittest men from the toughest legions, they were given special training in covert operations, military intelligence and amphibious warfare.

They often adopted the clothing and language of their enemies, relying on specialized training and local contacts to operate behind enemy lines.

These men were the tip of Rome’s deadly spear.

They were known as the Speculatores.

speculatores werent chosen because of their phycical skills but for there loyalty and discretion. They also came in all sorts of sizes to fit in within the locals in their enemies lands. I think you you are mixing them with the Praetorian, who were chosen because of their skills and experience. And also were an elite force that mostly protected the empire.

They not only were special forces, but spies, assassins ECT. Alot of them were also recruited from the local populace.

So they were basically Green Berets mixed in with Navy Seals since they did Amphibious warfare as well but also studied the enemies’s culture and customs to infiltrate.
