Piece: Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 4

Totally agree...a very powerful and modern work that doesn't get the love it deserves because it's missing that luscious 2nd subject melody that Rach 2&3 have...tonebase piano did a video on this very topic, and concluded you can't listen to 4 with ears (and expectations) for a sequel to 2&3

I love this part so much! It always gives me goosebumps. Especially when that same melody comes back at the end of the last movement 👌

Indeed, Rachmaninov's 4th Piano Concerto is underrated. It is very different from the others, so disappoints those who expect the familiar pattern with a Rachmaninov piano concerto, especially the characteristic "big tunes", including the triumphal final version of such tune at the end. Actually, this concerto does also have tunes in that style (indeed, it begins with one of them), but they tend to be shorter, and the concerto as a whole seems to be more about exploring its material at the level of short motifs - not to mention the very advanced harmony and rhythmic complexity that abound in this concerto.
If you can drop any expectations you may have, I think you can find this concerto just as satisfying as any of the others.

As someone who is 6’ 7” and can reach an octave and a fifth, I don’t think anybody in the modern era understands how difficult it is to be both a goated composer while being such a great pianist, Rach is the goat of piano no questions asked. There is no argument. Man could play anything, get bored of it, speed up the tempo, reach intervals that nobody else can, and offer interpretations that cannot be replicated. The fact of the matter is that the bigger something is, the slower it moves, but I dare you to try telling that to Rachmaninoff’s hands. Nobody on this planet can play with the same emotional weight as Rachmaninoff, period.

Azerbaijan's classical music is so underrated. I highly recommend you to listen to it: Uzeyir Hajibekov ; Qara Qarayev ; Fikret Amirov. You can even do shorts about it, because this music is so beautiful.

Looks like this piece may finally be starting to make its way to being more known? Tonebase made something of this too. It's so sad it never got the attention it deserved in its day. And it still hasnt.

This is the best Rach Concerto IMO, that’s a pretty unpopular opinion yea.
