During a colonoscopy, a long, flexible tube with a camera at the end, called a colonoscope, is inserted into the rectum and guided through the colon. This allows the doctor to visually inspect the colon lining for any signs of abnormalities, such as polyps or inflammation. If any abnormalities are found, the doctor may take tissue samples (biopsies) for further examination, or they may remove polyps.
