The 1st legendary Katana that you have access to is during the heist prologue mission. After T-bug unlocks the window go up the stairs instead. Kill the two enemies then check inside the car for a katana that does 500% crit damage

When meeting the Ripperdoc for the first time, in the courtyard before his hideout is an elevator that takes you to the roof. There's a sniper rifle there, though it has a high lvl requirement.

If you go for the peaceful option in the mission 'The Pickup' and buy the flathead from Royce, without getting into combat with them, than later on in the game during the mission 'Second Conflict' you can get Dum Dum's revolver 'Doom Doom', which is way more powerful than Royce's 'Chaos' pistol.

there is a door many miss during the mission at the Maelstrom base. At 3:40 above Jackie and left of Dum Dum, there is a door. Inside is a amazing sniper rifle for early game snipers, along with other assorted goods. In there also leads to the room where Brick comes out of. Also, the Satori katana is on the roof in the aircab when doing "The Heist" mission. This allows you to melee the quest if you prefer.

There’s also really early Mantis Blades, there’s a named psycho named Mario something that, once you enter his lair, there’s a case filled with stuff to the right. Make a manual safe beforehand, and you can farm the case for the mantis blades. You can just run away from Mario at any level while still getting the mantis blades, just make sure you go to a ripperdoc to get them installed

I got the chaos pistol while I was with the Malestorms, I took to long to help Royce and just heard how Dum Dum screams "No, the killed Royce!" Got the pistol. And Dum Dum followed me all the way to the BD tutorial.

Afterlife is my next mission and I have like 7 Katona's, a machete, sledge. Just gotta hit gigs and sides and search everything

There is a legendary crafting manual on afterlife's roof. Also you can get one of the best katana in game early on when you are in Yorinobu's room during the heist.

The rare iconic tech pistol titled "LIZZIE" is also very good! I picked it up on the table just before the stairs leading up & out of the underground area at Lizzie's Bar, during the mission where you are searching for Evelyn at Lizzie's Bar and later end up visiting the location "Cloud's."

i found a katana very early close to vs apartments in a random hostage thing that has electricity on it :)

There's also 2 Icon weps you can get during the Act I's final mission. A pistol by the bed during the break-in and a katana at the roof at the start of the escape.

Another tip about getting guns from bosses, from what I've heard from people playing it, you can save before you get into any boss fight, kill them, and if you don't like the weapon you get, load that save before you fought the boss and try to get something else, because it's often random.
EDIT: also the earliest katana I think you can get is a legndary katana, the black unicorn, it shows up in V's apartment as soon as you have access to apartment, and you get if (along with other cool Witcher stuff) from signing up with GOG and then syncing up your the account you play the game on, for me it was playstation network. There are vidoes on how to get these items.

Earliest you can get a katana (a very powerful one at that) is when you enter your apartment for the first time. You get it by signing up for the rewards mentioned in lower right corner of the main menu. You can also get some sick Witcher gear and a few other very useful things I won't spoil.

If anyone is playing on a PS4, turning HDR off and some of the other graphic settings off helped the game run better for me. I'm sure the same applies to Xbox one.
